Protomartyr played tonight to a room full of squares and blew the fucking doors off. Best band I've seen this year, and the most evocative performance I've seen this side of Kriegshog. The guitarist's heavier tone that he switches to is always exactly the same as the beginning of "I wanna be your dog". I came home and my eye is drawn solely to their records to drown out the rest of the evening. I couldn't be happier about a band playing the game (and succeeding). "Smiths with balls" was my tag to bait people into coming, but they are such an utterly brilliant assemblage of influences that I feel guilty for trying to describe it. The songwriting is Herculean. They are one of the few bands to make the jump to the NPR-rock/Mosurock soup/festival scene that didn't take anything out of their sound - they added something that I don't know how to comprehend. Honest, raw, captivating, and disgusting in the right way. See 'em at all costs. Here's them playing on KEXP, which is exponentially less powerful than what they brought tonight. Great fucking band.
