Today is my friend Ahmed’s birthday (instagram). He turned 27 today. It is his second birthday during genocide, because he is from Gaza.

Recently my partner Howard and I were able to do some local fundraising here in Taiwan by hosting a small event. We raised money for 6 families we are in direct contact with. Ahmed received 1/6th of what we raised, and used a portion of it to distribute clean water. He wrote a note thanking me and Howard, but all thanks go to him for having the idea, coordinating, and editting this fantastic video as well; thanks also belong to the donors.

Infighting is either why open source is so good or bad

California Assembly Bill 1043

Two weeks after I complained about AB 2047, I find out about this other bill, enrolled into law in September, that has Linux distros scrambling for a way forward.

The law basically specifies certain properties of the APIs used to communicate a user's age bracket to a downloadable app and thus (it is assumed) to the developer of that app.

I don't write apps that collect age data, so why do I care? Because the easiest way for Linux distros to comply with the law is to stop licensing their software to California residents as of January 2027.

I'd hate to have to choose between using my favorite operating system and living in California!

visited the distro station i put up at the bus stop near me, and everything was gone! i was happy to know people were taking things, but it also makes me sad to know the likely reasons why 🙃

i also hadn't been in like a couple of weeks to restock, so i'm glad i finally convinced myself to walk there today. i restocked with 3 KF94s for adults, 3 for kids, and 3 3M Auras in terms of masks. i also put in a couple of boxes of rapid tests that had 2 tests each in them. i had to do a little bit of taping to secure the bag and the posters i put up, but everything's looking pretty good otherwise!

i know i'll never know the full impact of what i do, but i sure do hope people at least keep taking the resources i put out there (and fingers crossed that they actually use them!) 😷✨
