why would ez choke her to death instead of just burning her alive…… is he forgetting the autopsy would show the cause of death??? bc knowing this show, the fire isn’t going to burn all evidence again. they keep getting themselves tied into mess like…. if anyone finds out it’ll be over for him.. I’m so SICK OF THIS FJFJFJF WRAP IT UP.
I saw a comment somewhere in the Mayans MC-tag where a few users called Miguel a cry baby and I just ... it got me thinking because I don’t feel like he is one. So this is a bit of a rambly, incoherent text about my view of Miguel’s grieving process. Also, long one.
The risk of stereotyping
At the start of season 3 I thought that Elgin James just presented a stereotype, the rich businessman cheating on his little housewife. However, I think it goes deeper than that if you really stare it down, pick it apart. Miguel is an emotional human being, you can see it in the way he worries for his kidnapped son in season 1, in the way he worries about Emily slipping away from him in season 2. He was probably taught that crying is a weakness and men aren’t weak. They’re calm and collected, strong, resilient - and if someone wrongs you, you kill ‘em. He’s never learnt how to cope with sadness, loss, anger, or any other emotion that isn’t associated with positivity, that’s clear as day to me. He’s killing people left, right and center and has since season 1.
Coping mechanisms
I don’t think Miguel cheats ‘cause he loves Emily any less, or that’s she’s somehow done something to warrant cheating. No woman deserves to be cheated on. For Miguel, I think it’s a form of escapism, like how people that are depressed or riddled with anxiety sometimes turn to something that gives them comfort or release, something that takes their mind of it for just a second. And yeah, it’s not really a great comparison because it sounds like I’m condoning his behavior - and I’m not - but it’s the only one I got - and the outcome is the same. Escape. Forget.
I also think one of Miguel’s coping mechanisms is distance, and I have a theory of it being related to anger and guilt. He feels guilty that he’s not broken down like Emily is and angry at his mother for leaving him like that and not reaching out to him - which makes him feel more guilty. Look at the way he distances himself from Emily. He comes home, barely says a word to her, demeans her, and then goes to have a shower and leaves again. He’s pushing her away. I know from my experiences, that sometimes when a person you love dies, you feel guilty after laughing, after feeling joy, love, comfort, whatever.
I also have another theory, and this might seem crazy. But because of the bond Miguel and his mother had, and I’ve touched on this in a different post - here - I think Miguel feels like he should have dibs on the grieving. I think there might be some jealousy there. He’s jealous that Emily’s grieving the way society tells us we should. Sometimes I think Miguel cheats because he can’t stand to see Emily be more broken down than him.
The grieving process
Grieving looks different for all of us. Some of us cry, some of us don’t. And sometimes it differs depending on how the person we’re grieving came to not be in our lives anymore. Dita’s death was traumatic to say the least. It wasn’t like she was just laying there, they’d burned her to a fucking crisp. It’s okay that it takes time. Emily’s somewhere between totally broken down - considering she’s on anti-anxiety medication to get the images of Dita’s body erased from her mind - and ready to get back to normal. She’s sick of the grieving. Probably because she’s gone through the process.
Miguel copes by escaping to another woman. He wallows in pain and simultaneously puts the grieving process on hold. Every time he feels sad he goes to Palomo, he pushes the feelings of sadness out of the way. He’s not even returning the medical examiner’s calls because he’s so afraid that his mother’s cause of death is what he believes - that she committed suicide.
Conclusion
Some questions have come up whilst writing this piece. Why are we seeing Miguel as a cry baby? I don’t think his cheating ways warrant us to say he’s a cry baby. You gotta see behind the actions to understand that grief is complex. There’s nothing okay with cheating, but for someone like Miguel who’s clearly never learnt to cope with emotions it’s a plausible coping mechanism. Second question, doesn’t it say alot about us when we see a man in this state and automatically want him to get over himself? The stigma around grief is around us all the time. When it comes to Miguel that stigma is, to say the least, loudly expressed. No one’s telling Filipe to get over himself, no one’s telling Bishop to do it either. Also, something else to ponder over - I’ve never seen anyone saying the same about women grieving, why is that?
emptying my drafts of my mayans’ character recaps + analysis before S3 airs.
Emily Thomas Galindo:
For most of S1&2, I pretended she didn’t exist because she felt like a token character of Sutters, a “gotta have at least one white woman and wouldn’t it be fun if she was caught between two Latino men?” kind of token. I have to say, I don’t think a white woman should be a lead woman of a show depicting Latin American people (that doesn’t mean no white people should be in it at all), but aside from that, so far she’s a broad strokes character with no nuance. Hopefully we’ll see a little more grey in season 3, more complexity and background brought to the foreground. It’s like I said in an earlier post, Adelita is what Emily is supposed to be as a leading woman.
That said, Emily could be an interesting character, albeit unlikable, if she’s developed beyond EZ and Miguel which up until this point hasn’t happened which makes her boring to watch.
She is intentionally manipulative towards EZ every time they’re together with lines like, “Hopefully mine (my world)”, “I needed to see you,” “You’re the only one I can trust,” “I’m being punished for what I did to you.” etc.
She’s one of the most selfish characters on the show and only wants to see him when she needs something, be it information, reassurance or a favor, but make no mistake, EZ is no more than an itch which once scratched, she’ll be over. If Adelita’s baby did somehow turn out to be Miguel’s, it would give her free reign to pursue a desperate and overdone one night stand with her high school sweet heart.
“Don’t make me choose, EZ” I have no doubt she truly loves Miguel, but more than that the proximity to his power which she borrows from time to time. Her thinly veiled threat about choosing is more about her than Miguel or Cristobal though she keeps saying it’s her family she wants to protect, it’s her life she won’t give up. I have yet to see a maternal side to her (probably because of her mother?) and I hate to say it because society always expects more (too much) from women than men in the home, and fuck that - but in the context of the show she isn’t attached to her son. Miguel is as much of a shit parent as she is, but he shows affection and attachment towards Cristobal when he is there.
Emily loves Miguel knowing full well what he is and what he does or has others do, and even encourages it when it will benefit her. A child was burned in the square and that was after she told him not to retaliate but she stayed because it was collateral she could live with if it meant she got her son back. She’s fine with carnage if it protects the life she has. EZ hints she’s changed when he says she’s settled into the world, but I think she was always like that.
She’s also fully aware of what she still means to EZ and uses it to her advantage every time. She commits emotional warfare on him, but it’s a clever nod from the writers because we know she IS her mother, Diana, even without ever meeting her with this simple line, “My mother can be generous, but we both know it comes at a cost, usually with emotional interest.” She is describing her mother but this is quintessential Emily. Not to mention she’s saying this, WHILE BRIBING HER ONE “FRIEND”.
She also visited EZ in jail and handed him a photo of a baby she knew she was going to abort or had already aborted. The girl may be Lily white, but she’s far from pure, in fact, something tells me she is rotten inside and that’s something I’d like to see come to fruition.
Emily clearly doesn’t like her mother and married Miguel to escape her overbearing, controlling ‘others with money’ ways, but her mother has been immortalized in her.
Finally, the acting itself is jarring. Whenever she’s upset or emotional, she does this weird breathing thing and tightens her neck and jaw. What is that?
my therapist, in a very pissed off tone, out of breath and sweating profusely trying to thumb through her notes: the twelve men and women you're in love with who are all either in an outlaw motorcycle gang, running a cartel, or are in the fbi trying to arrest the others... AREN'T REALLY REAL?
me, sobbing: they are all in trouble and i am still hORNY
Season 3 is gonna be so messy and honestly... I'm ready for it.
Between the brewing shit storm with the VM massacre, the killing of a Son and with Alverez covering up possible Mayan involvement with Ditas death......whew shit man.
Also it looks like Palo got away, so i can imagine he's going to immediately report this back to the Sons if not after he calls his crew.
On the Cartel side of things, Galindo may start to unravel at the death of his mom. Will this bring Miguel and Emily closer? Who knows
I wonder if Nestor will mention the tracks to Miguel tho....
And....correct me if I'm wrong but...An autospy will have to be done on Ditas body right? So wouldnt they suspect foul play if her hyoid bone is broken? If these results come back to Miguel, then he would suspect the Reyes family from the start?
