The Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (LBRP) is often called the backbone of ceremonial magick. Historically, it was codified by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in the late 19th century, drawing from older currents of Kabbalah, Hermeticism, and Renaissance ritual. The ritual creates a circle of balance and protection, aligning the practitioner with elemental forces and anchoring the psyche in clarity.
In ceremonial terms, it is “banishing”, clearing a space of astral debris, parasitic thoughtforms, or chaotic influences. But as Damien Echols emphasizes in High Magick and Angels & Archangels, the ritual isn’t about fear or superstition. It’s about energetic hygiene. Just as you bathe to cleanse your body, the LBRP cleanses the subtle body. At its core, the LBRP works on three levels: Banishing, Balancing and Protecting.
The Golden Dawn made it highly elaborate, but Echols reframes it for modern practice: it doesn’t require robes, daggers, or perfect Hebrew pronunciation. What gives it force is focused will + repetition. Done daily, it builds a shield of light and alignment that makes you less susceptible to manipulation, projection, and psychic noise. At its heart, the LBRP is about standing steady within yourself.
It says, This is my space, my spirit, my alignment. Nothing enters that is not aligned with truth.
