I actually can't get my bath bombs really REALLY black
Getting *anything* REALLY black is tricky! I buy black candles and melt them down to be re-poured because trying to dye regular wax is just… it cannot be done.
Here’s the best way I’ve found:
-Use activated charcoal. Like a good handful of it. At least ½ cup per the standard bath bomb batch recipe. It will leave charcoal residue on your skin and on the bathtub, but cleans up with soap and water.
-Speaking of the standard bath bomb recipe: epsom salt doesn’t take dye or coloring very well, so I tend to leave epsom salt out of the bomb itself and add it to the bath later. Just baking soda, cornstarch or dry milk, citric acid, activated charcoal, and coconut oil/polysorbate 80/fragrance.
-I also added like 15-20 drops of black dye I got with a soapmaking kit
-The magic ingredient for activated charcoal bath bombs is polysorbate 80, about 1-2 ounces of it per batch. Also makes the charcoal easier to clean up. You can get polysorbate 80 from Amazon or from wherever you get citric acid.
Try these steps and you too can have your very own mini River Styx in your bathtub!
