when did you learn to knit?
I learned when I was, I think, around five. My mum learned knitting from her dad when she was five, and was knitting multicolour pullovers from her own designs when she was twelve, which she never viewed as unusual in any way. She also sewed a lot. She knit and sewed most of our clothing as kids, so apparently as a Small Child, this knowledge was simply transferred onto me automatically. The way she tells it, it was an excellent way to keep me occupied, and I cheerfully produced a number of scarves and hats and doll sweaters before encountering a primary school handicraft teacher who didn't believe me I could already knit before I could write, which apparently threw me into such crisis that I stopped (and started sewing instead). Then the internet brought me knitty.com and I started again.
do you think you could teach someone to knit?
I have taught several friends! Both in person, and via paper letters, with lovingly hand drawn diagrams. I have a little sock knitting course sitting around somewhere, written for my friend whom I see about once a year, and who is dutifully bringing her First Sock along each time, to knit under my supervision. It's the only time in the year she has time for knitting, she says. After five years, she is almost at the heel turn, and I'm so so proud of her!
