An alphabet book that uses each letter to depict a specific moment from the Bible.
Target Audience/Age:
Ages 2 to 5.
Narrative Plot
Gives a summary of the Bible, touching briefly on the Creation, Exodus, Gospels, and Revelations.
Beginning: God creates the universe, but Adam and Eve’s sin cause a fall from grace which allows the Israelites to be captured, so God raises Moses to free them. (8 pages)
Middle: People are still cruel and ignore God’s laws. (10 pages)
End: God sends Jesus to fulfill all his promises. (8 pages)
Coherence/relation between text + visual pictures:
Each letter is paired with a passage of text and image that represent it. The alphabet letter featured on each page is illustrated in with bold, bright graphics, reminiscent of illuminated manuscripts from the Middle Ages (I was specifically reminded of the Chi Rho Iota page from the Book of Kells, c. 9th century).
Storytelling techniques used:
This book uses tension in an interesting way, in that it spends the ‘middle’ segment focusing on the high-stakes humankind’s suffering and wrongdoing. It uses a ‘big reveal’ of Jesus being sent to resolve everything.
Physical structure/design:
Physical copy had 32 pages, 26 of which were story. There were no two-page spreads.
Brief assessment of the book's quality:
This book is beautifully illustrated, and it’s bold, bright graphics are really reminiscent of pre-renaissance biblical art. It does a good job of introducing the Bible as a narrative, and distilling some of the larger stories into small, one- or two-sentence summaries. I’m not a religious person, so I didn’t realize that this was a Biblical book in any way; while I’m sure that the title would be a giveaway to people who are a part of that culture, that reference was lost on me until I started reading it.
Brief assessment of potential use of book with young readers, if applicable:
While I would not feel comfortable reading a religious text in a library program, I might use this book in an art history workshop for teens (assuming I knew the group well enough) to show an example of historic references in contemporary work.
Brief assessment of the book's appeal to potential readers:
This book would appeal to caregivers who want to introduce their children to the Bible. A child might be interested in the dynamic, colorful illustrations, but I can’t imagine a child being invested in the broad, sweeping narrative without the help of a religious or cultural touchstone.
Effectiveness in digital format:
The entire digital format of this book is available here from the publisher’s website, which I think is fantastic! The bold colors look really bright and vibrant on screen, but the lack of borders between pages makes it a bit difficult to see which text is paired with each illustration.
