This happens with a lot when fans project their sadness on the artists and expect them to validate their struggles in songs. The moment an artist hits big and writes about their actual life of carefreeness and fame and money fans are not able to relate to them anymore cos most of us don't have that privilege. I could relate to fine line when it came because at the time I was going through a break up as well and just like harry I too am a petty bitch with communication issues. I'm not sure if I'll have the same experience with his next album though.
I couldn't relate to 90 percent of Fine Line at all, which is part of why its not a massive favourite of mine.
With the Lorde thing, I just genuinely don't understand what people want from her. I've seen critiques like 'I wish she put more of what happened this year into her album', when she's a white millionaire from New Zealand. Wouldn't it have been weird for her to make an album about other people's struggle when it's not her life? If you can't relate to her when she's not high key depressed, that doesn't mean she has to pretend to be. It’s not my favourite album of all time but people having such weird reactions to it is just confusing me.
And then people having like, the least generous takes imaginable about her saying she struggles to watch the news etc. Coming from a website where people will have do not interact lists longer than the constitution of the united states, because they understand the concept of filtering what you are able to interact with and currently able to have the emotional bandwith to encounter. As if tumblr isn't constantly full of people reminding each other that you don't have to engage with content, constantly, that is effecting you negatively and that its ok to create positive media spaces in your life. Saying you don't watch the news is not the same as saying you have no concept of what's going on or don't care, I would say almost everyone on this website doesn't watch the news and doesn't read the New Yorker religiously, and still manages to know what's going on lol.
I don't know man, like toxic negativity culture is such a thing. It's actually ok to not entirely hate your life and to find a way to carve out a meaningful and joyful existence that doesn't always have to feel overwhelming and helpless . We constantly shame random individuals for like, not showing enough overt depression and sadness about humanitarian crisis or climate change, which is such a fucking waste of time when things like climate change and authoritarian military regimes are not going to be largely impacted by individuals from across the world, but by large corporate interests and governments who consistently get let off the hook by dumbasses who need to constantly shame each other, instead of actually understand what grassroots activism is and does.
