the SIX R's
you've heard of "reduce, reuse, recycle" BUT! did you know there are actually six steps in the consumption cycle?
here they are:
1. Refuse
see if you can avoid buying a particular item at all! do you need it? is it a trend?
2. Reduce
think about what you can do to purchase less! can you meet that need with something cheaper or free? also—thrift shop!
3. Reuse
use the things you buy for as long as you can!
grocery bags
phones
dishtowels
scrap paper
"refill" products
etc
4. Repurpose
use it in a way it wasn't intended
cut up old clothes for rags
make pallets into garden beds or furniture
put pencils in glass food jars
5. Recycle
melt/shred/reclaim materials and make them into something new!
6. Rot
let things return to the earth at the end of the cycle. try to avoid buying things that can't decompose.

the SIX R's ... 2!
the consumption cycle
aka the 6 R's:
Refuse
Reduce
Reuse
Repurpose
Recycle
Rot
in the first 6 R's zine, I defined them. in this one, I list some extra ways to conserve for each of them.
Refuse
when I want to buy something I know I don't need, I save it to a specific pinterest board instead. then I can find it later if needed, but also be proud of all the things I haven't bought.
Reduce
instead of buying something...
borrow it from a friend or relative
see if it's at a "Library of Things"
see if you can DIY it from what you have
grow it! (in a garden) (see if there's a free seed bank nearby)
go to a clothes swap
(thrifting & garage/estate saling also count since they divert things from the landfill)
Reuse
take good care of your stuff and follow maintenance instructions for things like knives, bikes, cars, keurigs[/other coffee makers], nonstick pans
also...
mending clothes
replacing broken parts instead of the whole thing
Repurpose
use it in a new way:
old shower liner as a paint dropcloth
start seeds in an egg carton or tp tubes
grow herbs & houseplants in empty yogurt tubs that have been cleaned w/ holes punched in the bottom
blankets/sweaters as a pet bed
old newspaper as mulch or compost ingredients
collage!!!
Recycle
use a blender, window screen & old paper scraps to make recycled paper!
look up your area's recycling regulations
Rot
you don't need a container to compost, just access to a patch of ground :)
