AMAI - Assigned Male at Imitation
There was some talk recently about the horrible fathers on DS9 and I had to do it to 'em
Can we focus a second about the way that Mora talks to/about Odo? I just finished watching The Alternate for the first time and I’ve got… thoughts.
I’m sure many and more intelligent people have already posted about this but I wouldn’t be a certified yapper if I didn’t ramble, so please bear with me.
Pretty much everything he said rubbed me off the wrong way bc of the undertones and the way that we can read the truth between the lines. He also has moments where what he’s saying is objectively wrong, but alas.
Literally the first time that we see him, he starts the conversation by scrutinising Odo and asking scientific questions about him, not having any real interest in him, but rather his development (p.e: Haven't quite managed the ears yet, have you? Oh, no, but they're difficult. Is the suit a suit, or part of you? And what about the boots?). Mora also tries to correct him for being rude to Quark despite Odo telling him that he’s misunderstanding the situation, but ofc, Mora insists that the problem is Odo’s, that he’s still having trouble integrating, etc. He’s trying to make himself needed and to make Odo think that he’s still underdeveloped.
Furthermore, when they’re in the runabout with Jadzia and the other doctor, Mora keeps interrupting Odo and rewriting his reality so that it fits Mora’s narrative. The image that he’s trying to push is that Odo’s insanely traumatic experience was, in fact, a rewarding, nostalgic experience. He goes as far as to say: working with you has been the most rewarding part of my career.
And please shall we notice that he says ‘working with you.’ He’s purposefully vague when he has to define his and Odo’s relationship and all it entails, and his answers throughout the episode change depending on whether or not they’re useful to himself. He doesn’t say ‘taking care of you,’ which is what at times he tries to make us believe, but rather ‘working with you.’ As if Odo was but a sample.
Also, he continues to correct Odo, trying to remind him that he knows more, he knows best. He even goes as far as to tell him directly (“I know more about shape-shifters than anyone in this sector”) to which Odo has to tell him that no tf he does not.
When Odo is literally just doing this job later in the episode, Mora stays there and keeps on freaking analysing. Even when he’s (supposedly) praising Odo, he does so by scrutinising him. He’s watching every action and reaction, still studying, Odo is still under observation, not a full person on his eyes. He’s impressed (you do it very well, I’m very proud of you Odo) and I truly believe that the only reason why he’s telling him this is because he’s trying to get Odo to need his validation.
He still sees Odo as an experiment, a triumph. He even says, the asshole: “you truly are a remarkable life form.” Not a remarkable person or even being. He said that purposefully, because he’s well aware that life form does not equate to being alive. Nanobes, bacteria, unicellular structure, they are “life forms.” No one would call that a person.
But he doesn’t see Odo as one.
“There’s still so much about you that we don’t know…” I mean, this one is self explanatory, but it ties into the aforementioned he things of Odo as an experiment. Clearly.
(I’m not going to analyse the whole fighting and manipulation bc it’s chewed out perfectly, but in case someone doesn’t remember, here’s the scene:
MORA: They won't know what to do with you. They'll put you in a high security prison, or quarantine you on a deserted asteroid in the Gamma Quadrant. Odo, they'll put you in a zoo.
ODO: I don't believe that. You don't know them.
MORA: What other humanoid have you been able to trust except me?
ODO: What makes you think I trust you?
MORA: I resent that. I really do. After the time I invested in you, after the education I gave you, the attention I gave you. You would not be here today if it were not for my guidance. I gave you more than anyone else in my life. You were my life. And then you walked away. And now you don't trust me? Fine. Put yourself in their hands then. You always had to learn your lessons the hard way, didn't you.
(End of transcript.))
And after all the dehumanization, using Odo’s trauma (THAT HE CREATED HIMSELF) against him, making Odo question his own nature and everything he believes about himself, threatening him with his worst nightmares, the very deliberate, insufficient way that he communicated with Odo and with everyone else about Odo… they still want us to believe that Mora should be forgiven?
The man was ruthless, and he doesn’t even apologize!!! I can’t stress this enough, there’s not even a proper apology. And his wishes and half-assed implied regret shouldn’t have that much weight (maybe not even any weight at all!)
wtf (pardon my french) is this episode??
Anyway, this is the only ep I’ve watched with Dr. Mora so far and, let me tell you, if this is how they’re going to handle their relationship, more posts are coming.
Men(?) will do anything but go to therapy. ""men ""will involuntarily transform into uncontrollable manifestations of their daddy issues instead of going to therapy
If there are 1000 Dr Mora haters, I am one. If there is one, it is me, if there are none, then I am dead.
World's worst father, he's controlling, manipulative, abusive, doesn't understand that his son's resentment of him is in fact his fault, he has never apologised, never said that what happened to Odo was wrong even if he didn't know any better. Odo has just gotten a baby shape-shifting and Dr mora is there and I'm sorry, he so bad to Odo. He's so cruel, he doesn't understand he doesn't care. Let me at this man, I will murder him with my bare hands
This is a Dr. Mora hate account. Fuck Dr. Mora! All my homies hate Dr. Mora!
Dr. Mora: Don’t you miss our experiments, Odo?
Me:
Rancid vibes when star trek ds9 makes Odo forgive his abusive parent, Dr Mora, and welcome him back into his life without the asshole deserving even one second of Odo's time or really facing up to the abuse he put Odo through. Disgusting. Hope Dr Mora gets projectiled into 30 ft of concrete
