I've been watching too much Star Trek recently so here's a Ted Lasso Star Trek AU

Rebecca - human Starfleet Admiral who just very publicly and very messily divorced Rupert Mannion, who is also a Starfleet Admiral but literally everybody hates him, promotes Ted to be the captain of Rupert’s former ship hoping that it'll end up crashing and burning (metaphorically or literally)

Ted - half-Betazoid, half-human (y'know I'm giving the overly emotionally aware character even more emotional awareness) Starfleet officer who was promoted from being a Lieutenant to a Captain overnight, doesn't want the glory of being captain and is instead focused on the bond and morale between his crew and himself, taking the Captaincy isn't helping his strained marriage much

Beard - Vulcan Starfleet officer who was promoted to First Officer alongside Ted, the two have been inseparable ever since Ted helped Beard get out of a bad patch during their Academy years, odd blend between Vulcan stoicism and more human humor (the crew is unsure if Beard is actually his name or not, because it has to be a nickname, right? There's no way Beard is a Vulcan name. Right?)

Roy th’Kent - Andorian Tactical Lieutenant Commander who just wants to finish up his contract with Starfleet and then retire, has lost all of his enthusiasm and joy for his job after a string of bad captains and admirals, somewhat of a legend among tactical officers, could have become a captain multiple times but always turned down the offers

Jamie Tartt - human Ensign, hotshot pilot who graduated top of his flight class at the Academy, confident he’ll be the youngest captain in Starfleet history

Keeley Jones - human civilian initially on the ship because she was dating Jamie and being on a Starfleet ship was a good opportunity for more intergalactic content for her job as an influencer, eventually becomes an official crew member who acts as an ambassador/negotiator

Nathan Shelley - half-Vulcan half-human Ensign fresh out of the Academy, swings wildly between Vulcan stoicism and human emotions which more than often combine into awkwardness, on the Command track and dreams of one day becoming a Captain

Higgins - human Admiral, acted as Rupert’s assistant until the divorce, after which he fell down at Rebecca’s feet and begged for forgiveness, now acts as Rebecca’s assistant and is on friendship probation

Trent Crimm - Betazoid ship’s counselor, very no-nonsense, challenging Ted to come to terms with his own emotions, lives aboard the ship with his daughter

Dr. Sharon - human temporary ship’s counselor, doesn’t come aboard the ship until later in its run, Trent asked her to come aboard in hopes that she’d be able to make progress with Ted and the crew in ways he seems unable to

rewatching season two of ted lasso made me realize, as a tedbecca shipper, that those writers might just not fully know how to write two people who don’t want each other at least a little bit. because ted and dr. sharon, two fully platonic people (who i don’t ship) have a conversation where ted unironically says “oh, so that’s what it sounds like when you laugh”

Ted Lasso Finale Pros and Cons

PROS:

Nate telling everyone about Jade :))

Their performances in the final match, including Isaac kicking the ball THROUGH the net

Barbara’s scenes, and her continuing to work with Keeley!

Rebecca selling her shares and getting a happy ending with Boat Guy- just because it isn’t the ending I wanted doesn’t mean I’m gonna let it ruin the whole thing for me.

Even though I disliked the Jane thing, it made sense that Beard wanted to stay in England, he was always better acclimated than Ted. He seemed natural, and he had a home and community there.

CONS:

Unresolved storylines

The entire Roy/Jamie/Keeley situation? It was really unnecessary to bring Jamie back into the mix this late in the game. Plus that weird bar scene? Not to mention how they had really teased Roy and Keeley getting together for awhile (their whole arc this season was all over the place). Roy was being pretty immature, which kinda undid some character development. And I felt pretty unsatisfied by the lack of resolve there.

The fact that they’re still implying big moments that happened and not actually showing them!! There were a lot of big moments that we never saw- super unsatisfying (ex: Sam deciding to go to the Nigerian team).

Deliberately teasing Tedbecca like that:( The opening scene, her pouring her heart out and him saying NOTHING, her literally buying a first class ticket just to say goodbye to him. I’m not saying Tedbecca HAD to happen for it to be a good finale, just that all that was kinda cruel and irritating for the writers to mislead people like that.

Ted being uncharacteristically unresponsive to a lot of stuff, not talking a lot and joking like most other episodes.

Nate not really having any super impactful moments this episode after a long arc this season (and no Jade scenes). He’s one of the few characters this season who’s really gotten a fulfilling emotional arc, so for him to not really have any big moments this episode felt a bit like whiplash. Not to mention that we didn’t really get any indication of where he’s going from there career-wise? He’s still the wonderkind, so to have him back as a kit man was fun for the episode, but I expected a bit more for his future (at least a tease or something).

Beard marrying Jane (and Ted not being there??)

Ted’s whole ending, the way we have no reason to believe he’ll be at all happy there. I’m glad he’s back with his kid and everything, but what the hell. Like it’s one thing if we had been able to see his friends visiting and staying with him or something but nope! He’s just alone, in a place and with people who have caused him significant unhappiness throughout the show. I feel like they could’ve set it up better, maybe having him discuss things with Dr. Sharon or SOMEONE (just to see his perspective and understand what he’s thinking a bit more) but instead it’s just yet another example of not showing the important moments here.

Not getting any resolve about Jamie’s path in life, future plans, etc and instead only using this episode to make things weird with him and Keeley. They were fine as friends.

I’m not a Ted/Trent shipper (I feel for you guys), but Trent deserved at least one nice scene, a goodbye with Ted, something!

So in conclusion, despite how fun certain parts of this episode were, I was pretty unsatisfied with the lack of resolve among a lot of these storylines and characters, not to mention some poorly justified plot choices. As I mentioned below in my initial reaction, this whole season was so poorly planned out. I assumed that they would’ve at least planned for the finale, but it’s clear now that the whole thing was all over the place. They should’ve decided what they wanted in the finale and then spent the season setting it up. For example, when they decided it was going to end with Ted going home, they could’ve chosen to spend the season slowly working through this decision leading to an ending that would’ve felt justified (and they could’ve spent time setting up a way for him to be happy there). But instead, they introduced it in one of the last episodes. And I could use any number of examples here- Sam going to the Nigerian team, Beard staying, anything with Jamie, etc. This just felt rushed and random.

the category is happy go lucky, spontaneous himbo masking internal turmoil with endless optimism that results in overstepping boundaries but that's lowkey what ends up endearing ppl to them and their obscure referential, oftentimes entendre-based humor.

well i'd have two nickels- wait, wrong joke.

one thing i don't play about is my love for mr pebis bobbert, which technically means that ted is my type (no), tho pb is him in a different font, like ted may be given nuance/dimension by his mental health but pb has this throughline of a latent grounded, mellow, aware disposition that shows glimpses under pressure - less manic pixie dream girl and more flawed — ted's less personality struggles and more circumstantial, visa versa.

also interesting is me shipping the manic pixie clown thot with an intellectual, emotionally repressed person that challenges them. probably that opposites attract dynamic. and as someone who identifies with the angst riddled, over analytical, self-sabotaging types im able to appreciate the draw.

yes i still ship diane x pb, yes i kin diane, no this is not a conflict of interest.

anyways, forget keeley, forget bex, forget whoever idgaf, i wanna see doc sharon and ted date, they've seen each other's inner lives, they've been there at each other's lowest, they've catalyzed notable change within the other, when they need comfort they turn to each other, like i always look forward to them interacting. its an odd pair but they get each other, yk? — the one thing holding ted lasso back is there's no bojack for ted to want to dirty dog do, hence my decreased affinity.

I wish we got to see Dr Sharon hold Roy accountable like we got to see her do with Ted. Ugh those scenes could’ve been so juicy. I’d also love to know what Roy decides he wants to unpack first in therapy/what issue he believes is the biggest hinderance he has right now in his life. In my opinion, it’s his immediate anger towards others and himself. However, I can imagine he’d want to unpack quitting on Keeley and the struggle of retirement first.

Now I don’t know about you all, but I am a rom-communist. This season has had a lot of highs and lows, but I can feel it in my bones now. This season is going to have an airport running season. Ted’s flight will be called and he will be at the boarding gates ready to go as someone who loves him comes racing through the building to confess their love. Maybe Rebecca, maybe Trent. Most likely it will be all 22 AFC Richmond footballers, their 3 coaches, and all 5 members of staff will go barrelling through Heathrow just to ask Ted not to leave because damn it they love them and their story is not yet over
