The Family Table

Living between two households, the tables where we held family discussions bore witness to the two cultures I lived in. My Dad's place, in Central Park West, we sat across the dining room table from each other to talk seriously. My Mami's place in East Harlem, there was no dining room; all differences were settled at the kitchen table.

Maybe because John is from the South, he's a kitchen table boy. Perhaps it's more of a class thing than an ethnic thing. Regardless, it's easier to work things out sitting together, catercorner, knee to knee, where hands can hold hands.

The table legs groan under the sheer force of his thrusts, slow and hard. It's as if Dieter Bravo's goal isn't to remind you that leaving him on read last night was cruel. Instead he aims to exhaustively demolish the hard work of the props department right here, right now.

"Dee--"

You try to warn him of the failing furniture, but his hand clamps over your mouth.

"Shh. They can fix it," he grunts, hiking your ankle over his shoulder. "Gives them job security." When you silently glare, he grins. "And don't be thinking about other people."

The table in Delia's kitchen was overflowing with food, but that was to be expected when both she and Brock were cooking for themselves, Ash, Misty, Tracey, Goh, Chloe, Gary and Samuel. There wasn't any special reason, it was just that, for once, everyone was here. Which was a cause for celebration because it was unusual. Especially since much of the group spent so much time travelling the world.

But anyway, there was so much food: potato croquettes, stew, rice, and curry, amongst other things. And seeing all this, and the liveliness surrounding the table, filled Delia's heart with joy.

It was all in the little things, Anna noted.

At the breakfast table, Liselotte and Engetsu would sit slightly closer together than before, just enough for their hands to keep brushing by accident. Without either of them mentioning it, he would pick up two pieces of bread, and put one on her plate. She would check his cup, refilling it with coffee when it was empty. He would finish the grapefruit that was too sour for her.

Yes, the little things said a lot.

But the hickey she had noticed on Liselotte's collarbone this morning was also a huge clue.

"It's nice that Caine allowed us to go on a date," Ragatha tittered. Had she been human, she probably would have had pink cheeks.

Pomni could picture that in her head. Butterflies swooped in her stomach. "Yeah." She leaned over, putting a hand to her chin. "It's nice to have a moonlit candle dinner by the lake... even if Bubble's in charge of the food."

Just then (speak of the devil), plates of spaghetti poofed onto the table, and the sauce was... bright pink?

"Enjoy..." said a voice from the shadows.

Ragatha and Pomni looked to each other.

"Uh oh."

November 2025 Drabble Challenge

Day 22 (23 actually): Witch

Fandom: Dragon Age the Veilguard Pairing: f!Rook/Neve Rating: T for this one, overall M, just to be sure Word count: 100 (duh!) Author's note: I'm currently working on a long fic (slow burn) that will tell the story of Asha (my Rook) and Neve. I'm currently working on chapter six and it will be a bit before I'll start posting it. These drabbles are technically happening after that story since it will be snap shots of key moments in their relationship Asha remembers after DAtV (and before the sequel I have ideas for). I don't think there will be any spoilers for the fic ('Rook on the Seventh Rank' will be the title) if you've played the game. I'm not inventing the wheel anew just sharing some new perspective from Asha.

I want to work on these drabbles to help me get to know my Rook better and getting her voice down and sharing some insight into her motivation and reasoning, since the long fic will be mostly (not all of it though) from Neve's PoV. (this author's note is already longer than the drabble LOL)

Author's note 2: Thanks to my wife, who's always supporting me in my writing endeavors and is cheering me on after I ended a IDK five year hiatus? I couldn't do this without you.

Thank you for all the kudos and comments I got on this series so far. After not writing for a really long time this really means so much to me.

Drabble under the cut!

The witch was dead. Aelia was finally dealt with.

It had been a rough fight. Neve had attacked recklessly, without regard for her own or anyone else's safety.

Asha had her hands full with keeping Neve alive, redirecting shots, blocking swords and, if all else failed, taking the blows, meant for Neve, herself.

As Aelia collapsed, so did Asha, as the Threads moved in to deal with the bloodmage.

"Trouble, why do you still … I keep pushing you away and you still come running?" Neve whispered as she was trying to keep Asha alive.

"Not giving up on you, Slick."
