Her eyes wondered your form though they did not hunger like she thought she would. They were curious, and full of wonder. The way her heart fluttered softly at the sound of your voice and the soft touch of your finger tips on her cheeks.
Though deep down she knew. It could never be. It would never be.
So many old tales tell of the beautiful princess falling for the hideous beast, her kiss so soft and caring it cures the beast if it’s cruel ways and even crueler looks allowing them to live happily ever after.
Though this was no fairytale.
She knew there would be no happy ending.
Despite knowing this solemn truth, she could no help the way her heart yearned for you. Hearing your laughter was so intoxicating to her, the way you smiled so innocently completely unaware of how you tormented her so.
Your hands so soft and small compared to her own clawed ones. Were she not carful with you she would surely break you. But you were not afraid, often seeking her out in the dark of night whispering out to her with bright eyes.
That night the moon shone brightly illuminating the forest in an otherworldly glow. Soft blue light trickled down from the tree tops scattering the soft grassy earth below in puddles of blue.
Perched high in the tree tops she watched as you padded from your house up the small stone path to the edge of the forest.
Your voice barely a whisper seemed to sing out to her as she watched her step cautiously into the clearing. Hair whirling around, twisting and lifting in a brilliant show, glowing in the blue light.
Entranced by your beauty, the dragon with skilled grace lowers herself from her perch onto the grassy floor, her eyes never wavering from you as you seemed to dance about the clearing calling for her, having yet to notice her presence.
If one asked her how to describe what she saw in the moment she truly couldn’t.
Stepping to the edge of the shadows, she seemed to toe at the line between light and dark. Your eyes widened in delight at the sight of her flying to your side at you wrapped your arms around her waist pulling her into a tight hug. You couldn’t contain your joyous laughter as she spun you about clutching you against her gem.
Her own laughter joined yours creating a foreign song.
You both came to rest in the center of the clearing. The dragon looked down at your round face and your bright eyes. Your soft lips curving into a smile as you pressed you forehead into her arm. Seeing you here in this moment, the two of you alone in this perfect moment, Spinel’s heart swelled with love.
Leaning down to nuzzle her face into your cheek a barely heard hum escapes her throat. Taking a steady breath, she rests her forehead into your own before confessing to you.
“I love you, I have always loved you, I will always love you.”
Her faint glimmer of hope is quickly smothered as she waits for you to flee in disgust.
Small hands cup her face as you stand on your tiptoes to place a chaste kiss to her lips.
