Dragon Zuko greeting Katara vs Dragon Azula greeting Sokka
The Plot for the day is...
Zuko Plot 219: Wang Fire and The Dragon
Zuko is a dragon, born and bred from his mother's side, but since dragons hide among the humans these days, he doesn't KNOW he is, and his mother hoped he hadn't actually inherited the transformation and left before she could find out for real or not. So when the Agni Kai happens, Zuko reflexively turns into a dragon and flees the capital. Everyone at the Agni Kai saw it happen, (except Iroh who looked away!) but Zuko was very good at hiding and no one sees him escape the palace.
Not finding Zuko, and seeing an opportunity, Ozai declares Agni turned Zuko into a dragon for traitorous thoughts and he slayed the dragon before he could escape the palace. Since no one can find a dragon, no one can dispute this or dares try. So Ozai is heralded even MORE at the big man in charge.
Meanwhile, Zuko managed to get really far away. Several islands at minimum and ends up hiding out in a little cave at a rural and disconnected town on one of the volcanic Fire Islands.
The Volcano has been acting up lately and the townsfolk fear it will soon erupt if something isn't done but they aren't important enough for the Fire Sages to come calm the volcano. While worried about this, some of the townsfolk find Zuko injured and still in dragon form in the volcanic cave. At first they try to attack him, but the volcano gets worse.
In fear, Zuko lashes out at the attackers and bites off someone's arm. By happenstance, the volcano settles after that. Deciding this dragon must be controlling the volcano, the people ritually seal off his cave with metal, assuming he was a spirit who lived in the volcano since dragons are extinct and all.
Zuko feels anything but safe in this volcanic prison. He manages to find a trickle of water in the back of his prison to keep himself hydrated, but there is nothing to eat. Why would a spirit need food after all? He is in there long enough he begins to get delirious from the hunger and begins trying to escape the room in any way he can. Unfortunately he isn't used to being in a dragon body and there is not much room in his new enclosure since, again, his captors think he's a spirit!
Zuko's escape attempts stir up the volcano again, and in fear and superstition, the little town decides to sacrifice someone to the volcano spirit to appease it. Zuko, literally having been starved for weeks and being an injured child who needed nutrients to heal, hardly has a thought before he is devouring the fresh meat he's offered. It's only afterwards that he realizes what it is he ate and feels horrified about it.
Time skip a few years, the Gaang arrive in the Fire Nation and end up stopping by a strange little town having a big volcano festival. This being only their second stop in the Fire Nation, Sokka's face beard is still stuck to his face, so naturally he introduces himself as Wang Fire!
There seems to be some kind of prize raffle going on, and Sokka discovers it while wandering off from the group to inspect their odd town that Aang insists has to be a safe fun place. "It's the Fire Nation how safe can it be?" But Sokka can't resist a Prize! so he enters himself in the drawing under Wang Fire.
When the Gaang reconvenes before the drawing, they're all a little on edge cause this town is weird. And then they announce what the drawing is FOR. The winner will have the honor of being sacrificed to their volcano spirit! And of course, the winner is none other than "Wang Fire!"
Sokka is congratulated by all the towns folk who are acting way to chipper for this and manage to separate Sokka from the rest of the group in their eagerness to lay reverent hands on him and usher him towards the base of the Volcano. The rest of the Gaang panic trying to get him out of there, but they don't want to HURT the crazy people who had been so nice and weren't acting hostile, right? Toph disagrees but Aang insists they don't hurt the people and just snag Sokka before he can be sacrificed.
So they try to stay close and observe and see Sokka get crowned in necklaces of fruits and veggies (weird?) and then shoved into a cave. It's time to act! The Gaang launches forward ready to bust Sokka out only for the towns folk to end up being a lot better at bending than expected and stop them. TheGaang decides, yeah, crazy people need to go bye bye, Sokka needs help!
While the Gaang and the townsfolk are fighting, Sokka slides down a sort of slick ramp and ends up on the outside of looks to be a massive metal prison cell. A growling rumble comes from behind the bars, and Sokka speaks out cautiously. "H-hello?"
Sokka witnesses a very skin and bones looking dragon, covered in sores and scars from what look to be both burns and attempts to escape the metal bars. The only reason the dragon looks to have enough space to even move is because it's starved! This is NOT a spirit! Wtf!? They're keeping a LITERAL DRAGON locked up under the mountain and FEEDING people to it!?
When the dragon snaps at him and shows it very much can reach its jaws far enough through the bars to eat him if he isn't careful, Sokka yelps and quickly throws one of the veggie necklaces into the gaping jaw. The dragon chomps on them and draws back to swallow them whole, then darts forward again.
Sokka's genius kicks into high gear and he tosses the rest of the necklaces, the same thing happens. And then he starts emptying his pockets of the snacks he'd collected from the festival and starts talking. "Okay big guy, you're hungry, I have food. You want the food? You don't eat Me, okay? No eating Sokka." He scolds the dragon who actually seems to listen to him, even if panting heavily. It sticks its mouth through the bars around, holding its jaws open for food and Sokka tosses it in. It draws back and munches and swallows, then whines and begs for more. "Oh, jeez, how often do they even feed you? Will feeding it too much make it sick?" Sokka begins to pace while talking and brainstorming and the dragon pulls back to watch him with surprisingly intelligent eyes.
"Wait, can you understand me!?"
It nods.
"Was that an actual yes now? or just a dragony head nod?"
The dragon huffs, and opens its mouth, only for a very rough disused voice to come out, "I… understand."
Sokka's mind is blown and he and the dragon chat for a little while culminating to Sokka learning his name is Zuko and he wants to be free and he hates the taste of people but he's so hungry and that's all they give him and only every few months at most. And that Zuko is so so relieved to have someone treating him like a person and believing him for the first time since he got here and– and–
Then the Gaang bust in and grab Sokka, who shouts for them to "wait wait! Save Zuko too!"
"Zuko?"
"No time, let's go!" Toph metal bends the bars open and Zuko darts forward past the gaang and into the sunlight and out of the town into the woods beyond. For the first time in years he feels the sun and the grass and nature and he's so happy and relieved he rolls around in it and finally lets himself relax and pass out.
The Gaang finds him later, snoozing heavily and Aang is extremely upset at what has been done to this dragon. Katara gets to work with the healing and Sokka gets to work on the hunting and Aang and Toph stand guard in case anyone from the town tries to come after them.
Waking up to see trees and sky and hearing a woman's voice humming while a soothing feeling of water healing encompasses his face, Zuko feels at peace and for the first time since the Angi Kai, feels safe and reaches out for his "Mom…?" with finally once again human hands. No longer fearing for his life, Zuko's body reverted back to his human form and now the Gaang have a badly injured and starved Firebender on the team.
Only later do they learn he is ALSO the Prince and heir to the fire nation. That's gonna be a lot to unpack!
Let me know if you write it~!
I wrote a little thing for @muffinlance's The One Where Zuko's Hair Matches Sokka's and Other Tales: Chapter 18: Little Scaled Salvage 1: So You've Caught a Danger Noodle
Let Fly
Fandom: Avatar the Last Airbender
Genre: Angst, Comfort, Humor
Summary:
They say that Sozin's line are inhuman monsters. That's not what Chief Hakoda sees when he fishes a sickly thirteen-year-old Fire Prince out of the ocean. Then the boy knocks out his guard and forces Hakoda to chase him up the main mast to stop him from setting the ship on fire, and Prince Zuko proves exactly how much of a monster he is. Which isn't actually that much. Volume-wise.
Chapter 1 posting today, chapter 2 posts next week.
AU - Shortly after the death of his wife, Hakoda starts leaving the village for long periods of times on ‘fishing expeditions’ and coming back days later. After one of these events, he returns to the village, and Katara and Sokka, with one red and one blue dragon egg in his arms saying they were given to him by a woman who washed up on shore. She said her name was Ursa.
