DRAMATURG APPRECIATION POST
Y'all Dramaturgs are so dang nifty! Like, do they research? Write? Direct? Who knows! Nobody can decide so they turn into little nerdy awesome-goblins and do ALL OF IT!! OMG it's such a cool job!! You simply BECOME the script!!! More to follow, such a cool nerdy thing!
ID under the cut! I moved it there because this one is v long and my ID’s turn into mini-fics anyway
picky thing! the stage manager for my current show groups the dramaturg team with ‘crew’ rather than ‘production team’ and I’m a little insulted? nothing against crew, mad respect and I love doing tech, but dramaturgy isn’t tech! I’m worried about not getting told when production meetings are 😬
EDIT also wtf I have no clue if/how I should bring this up bc I’ll sound like a whiny pretentious bastard!
Sometimes I wonder what my role in theatre is, where I fit. As a playwright and dramaturg, I often feel like I’m an extra, existing and trying to make an impact but contributing nothing to the gift of my craft. Worse, I feel like people don’t know what to make of me in my community. Like, I do stuff, but what?
Does anybody else feel like that?
manuscript reading services
i finally put together a website for myself as a way to start seeking works to read and comment on. i’m a recent graduate of a Creative Writing program, a less recent graduate of a Dramaturgy program, and I am very much familiar with giving feedback in and out of workshop settings.
what i’m offering. A thorough read of your manuscript, a collecting of written notes (other options, such as an audio recording, are available), and (where possible) an in-person, Skype, or phone-based conversation about the work.
what i’ll read. Playscripts, essays, stories, or most anything you'd like. I'm especially familiar with playscripts and genre-bending nonfiction essays, but chances are I'll be glad and prepared to read anything you send me.
timespan. The amount of time it'll take me to read and respond to your manuscript will depend on the length of your manuscript. My aim is to send your notes within a week, but I in some cases I may take as long as two weeks.
cost. I do need some monies in order to read your manuscript, but we can discuss what seems reasonable for your work. Send me an e-mail at [email protected] to discuss pricing.
process. Follow this link for information on the submission process, including the submission survey that will help me read the work in a way best suiting you. Follow this link for information on the post-submission process.
why choose me? Because I'm here. Because I'm super-ultra-excited to read your work. Because I enjoy sharing lengthy, detailed, and deeply thought responses to what I read. Because I'm happy to read with a focus on areas and concerns of your choice. Because I'm a sad little dramaturg slash writer with no manuscripts to read, and your work would bring light to my life.
want to chat beforehand? you may not feel comfortable jumping in an giving your manuscript to a complete stranger. that's totally understandable. if you'd like, feel free to e-mail me ([email protected]) or send me a tumblr message and let me know you're potentially interested but not yet read to submit. we can chat a bit, you can get a sense of whether i'm right for your manuscript. we can also chat about such matters as price, what you're looking for from my read, etc.
check out the website at this link for more information, and again, feel free to e-mail or message me with any questions you might have!
