Another Round. 

D: Thomas Vinterberg (2021).  Should you drink and teach? Another Round gives us four Danish high school teachers, (Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Lars Ranthe and Magnus Millang) facing the doldrums of middle age, who decide to experiment with keeping their blood alcohol to a .05 level. It works for a while, making them looser, funnier’ and more in touch with their students. So they decide to bump it to .10…..

It’s almost refreshing that the film’s comedy is muted, rather than the broad slapstick an American version might be (I dread a remake). There’s an undercurrent of sadness, especially when one of the teachers slides into full-blown alcoholism and another sees his marriage fracture.  Lesson’s are learned and the film achieves a modest good feeling on its way to a climax where Mikklesen demonstrates what a Danish version of Slumdog Millionaire’s ending might look like. You couldn’t call Another Round a party, but it achieves the mild buzz it’s looking for.
