Boot Camp aka Combat School (Konami - arcade 1987)
Maryell von Wittenberg, Major of the Psycho Soldier Specialized Combat Academy.
You're starting a new Combat School. What's your curriculum?
You are an entrepreneur with just enough capital to start your own, privately-owned combat school in one of the larger, richer cities of Vacuo which would qualify at least as "Second World". You own no other businesses for financial or material support in this new venture, and if this fails, you will lose everything.
Since it's Vacuo, all other combat schools in the city are also privately-owned institutions, with no taxpayer funding from the government. You need to prove to parents and their children that your school will provide a better education than your rivals. The larger your clientele and the more prestigious your reputation, the more people want to donate to your school. Other businesses will donate in order to advertise themselves and earn public goodwill as your sponsors.
Intra-city tournaments between combat schools are WAR, where you prove your education superior to that of your competitors through your students defeating their competitors. The venues are also opportunities to attract new sponsors, and to make your current sponsors happy to be represented by a winner.
The annual Vacuo Regional Tournament, where students meet between school terms to compete with students from other cities across the region, is fiercer still.
Since it's Vacuo, there is a minimum of government regulations on how you run your school. Basically, as long as you get results without losing the faith of your clients, your sponsors and donors, and the city's larger population, you can do whatever you want.
Not all of your graduates need to become cadet Huntsmen at Shade Academy or elsewhere. Some may have their hearts set on joining the city police force or fire departments, or settle for contracting with the city as wall-guarding militiamen, or private businesses as security guards cheaper than professional Huntsmen.
Regarding your students, assume that:
you take in children as old as 12-13 and train them over the course of 4 years
virtually none of these children are going to get any other education during those years, so if you're not teaching them math, history, or science, no one is
all children need to be taught how to use their Auras defensively without any plot-convenient ritual like Pyrrha used for Jaune, and the learning process takes much longer than it did for Oscar since no one else is absorbing an ancient wizard's skills
few children arrive knowing what their Semblance is, and most of those are non-physical; some students may never find their Semblance before they graduate
few children arrive with any training in any form of self-defense; virtually none have ever seen a Grimm
few children have Huntsmen parents; most children arrive with multiple ideas for weapons and fighting styles, most of which won't work
few children (with Huntsmen or wealthy parents) can afford to make fancy weapons like Team RWBY's; most have to make due with humbler weapons; the poorest may only have simple spears or axes to make the most of the least metal -- donors and sponsors might mitigate this issue by funding students directly rather than through your school, but they're still going to choose to help students going to a school with a proven record
So. What do you do?
Now, I’ve gotten some very interesting answers to this question on Reddit, and I’ll be reposting those with future reblogs of this post, with the authors being credited by name.
