Wait, the brain fog goes away?
I mean, caveat, it does for me. I can’t even presume to tell you that the brain fog I get is from ADHD or some other neurological issue, I’m not diagnosed and may in fact not have it (I’m workshopping the problem, not least because ironically getting an examination for ADHD involves making phone calls).
I find that if I’m feeling like I can’t focus, like I’m in a mental haze, if I can engage with something in some way for just long enough, it’ll pull me in and my actual focus returns. If I can crack the textbook and start reading, even if I’m not retaining, by the third or fourth page I’m deep enough into it that I’m able to concentrate and I can go back and look at what I missed. Sometimes it just means looking at pictures in the book for a couple of minutes first. It’s getting the book open that’s tough, but if that’s the specific purpose of why I’m there, it’s a little easier. (Not having a smartphone probably helped.)
It’s still the same today at work -- if I can get the files I need open and just start filling out the mindless “look up info and enter it” shit, after about five to ten minutes I can start on the more creative parts of the assignment, and then go back to the really complicated “look up info but in a separate database requiring a lot of discerning of good from bad data” bits.
It’s why I stopped using Word for my work and started using OneNote (a fancy expensive Microsoft version of Evernote) -- I just have OneNote always open and all the templates and documents I need are always available inside it, so getting started is way less effort.
And the reason I always went to the bagel place in college was that they did a Saturday special that was a bagel and a bowl of mini-ravioli soup, both of which take a while to eat, and I focus way better if I’m actively eating while I do it. This is also a reason I’ve found my Sunday hamburger brunches so successful in terms of getting writing done. It’s possibly something to do with metabolizing the food, or maybe to do with distracting some of my other senses (it DOES NOT work with music, interestingly) but if I can absently have a meal while working, I get more done.
