The Avenging Conscience (1914)
DW (David Wark) Griffith publicity still. David was born in La Grange, Kentucky and had a whopping 518 directing credits from 1908 to 1931 and then a posthumous segment of a 1951 feature. Of course, most of his credits were for early and primitive shorts in the 1910s.
DW is the first important American director. His first two big successes of the 1910s are Birth of a Nation (1915) and Intolerance (1916). Both are difficult to sit through in the 21st century. Broken Blossoms was another hit and the first American entry among my best 1001.
