Molten Lava Colorway on Perendale Lambs Fleece

Played with some different than usual dye colors. I hadn’t ever worked with reds before so I broke out some of my perendale lamb wool and searched for some inspiration. Thanks to National Geographic, I found this image of molten lava and gave it my best shot to recreate the colors.

The reds absolutely overtook the dye pot but I think it came out pretty well for a first time. I’m debating how to process the wool for spinning. I don’t know if I want to drum card it or spin from the lock. It’s a very short staple wool, as it is the lamb’s first clipping, so the staple is between 1-1.5 in/3-4cm, and lambs being lambs is full of vegetal matter (VM). I think I will break out the drum carder and see how it cards up. Drum carding would make it a lot easier to spin, but I worry it may lose some of its vibrancy. We shall see. Until then I am enjoying the feel of soft fluffy lambs wool.

WIP of the Duet Capelet by Vanessa Ewing using some handspun. Handspun was the mossy rocks dyejob by JillianEve that was one of my first spins & chain ply on my e-spinner last year. I’m loving how it’s colour pooling, exactly how I envisioned when I spun it. Had to do some colour doctoring when I switched to the second ball to keep the gradient going & now I’m trying to decide how many more repeats to extend before doing the finishing garter stitch border rows.

2nd attempt at this I will not rest until I get the colours in my head onto the wool perfectly.

Got bored and messed around, found out natural henna powder when made into a thin soupy consistency is AMAZING at dying/staining wool!! I assumed it would do *something* because it dyes skin and hair so well, but I didn't expect such a vibrant color so quickly! I don't know how well it'll last or anything since I'm just getting into fiber arts/textile arts, but like look at this color😍 This is JUST raw (washed) wool dipped into the 'liquid' for all of maybe 10 minutes and rinsed, no mordant or anything of the sort. Needless to say I think the experiment is a success lmao

I just wanted to share this because I’ve been learning how to dye my own wool for my felting projects and I’m really happy with how it’s turning out so far. Im slowly getting better at carding it, and have been getting it off my own sheep which feels really nice. Resourceful even.
