Day 19 of Inktober
Tim Gula is one of the closest disciples of Frank Reilly alive today. I met up with Tim to watch him do some quicksketch using the Reilly Method. Enjoy.
If you’re not an advanced artist with a well trained eye, starting with details usually ends with wacky proportions. In this student critique, we’ll examine the work of two students who focused on drawing foot bones without following the big-to-small hierarchy. I’ll show you a 2D technique called “enveloping” and then a 3D process that helps keep your forms dynamic and in proportion. Woo!
The human images in this style of rock art from western Arnhem Land are known as dynamic figures (or maybe post-dynamic in this case). It depicts two human figures, perhaps a male and female running towards each other. They have hair belts and the one on the left has tassels hanging from his chignon hair-style. We like to refer to this painting as "John and Marcia". Location— Kundjorlomdjorlom, upper Liverpool River.
