FIFA 20 Review
Putting on a new T-shirt does not make you a different person.
FIFA is back at it again with FIFA 20’s release coming at the end of September (24). The games are still much anticipated every year and people start stirring hype around the release early into June and July around events like E3 and the likes. For this review I am going to take a different direction on this title, otherwise I could just copy-paste my FIFA19 review and maybe add one paragraph to the mix to sum up FIFA20. Instead, I want to talk about my experience as a FIFA player in FIFA20 and how does it play in my eye now that we are in this rapidly growing technological age.
FIFA has for a long time been the favourite of the football titles in the world, with licensing and rights coming fast for FIFA and EA, they have long seen success in the genre; however, FIFA has hit a plateau recently and the reviews over the last years has shown this to be true. What has EA Sports done to fix this issue? Have they fixated too much on making money in the loot crate system via FUT? Has the game lost its core functionality of being a fun and social game that allows a group of friends to come together and laugh as the weekend tournament commences on a late Friday night?
Honestly, I feel like EA is doing all the right things but at the wrong times. FIFA17 brought in the “storied” career mode; The Journey, and it felt fresh and exciting, the game became interactive and sucked in players that would crave more from FIFA, however, this died as they over engineered the mode in FIFA19 and created too much for too little return and I personally did not finish the mode and do not know anyone who actual has. The Journey does not return in FIFA20 but the story is based on the new mode “Volta”. Volta is FIFA Street style mode that uses Futsal as a base line and incorporates the skilled techniques of street football (perfected by the Brazilians and the French). The story mode is less dragged and plays out fairly quick, but the effort behind it is fairly minimal and feels like it was added for something extra. In my honest opinion, Volta is an amazing edition and I feel like it could warrant a standalone release.
Over the last few years, FIFA has changed more than most game in terms of the mechanics and gameplay, however, this is probably just to give the game a fresh feel and not to actually improve the experience. FIFA20 on the other hand feels like it is doing a job with its new mechanics and overhauled game style, with defense AI and mechanics becoming more prominent and attackers speed and strength catching a buff, the game feel balanced and real. The balls mechanics have changed too and pitch type and grass exposure takes a toll on the speed of the game; through the balls and the player’s fatigue. Overall, the game has improved more than ever before and the new style of play, from the new set pieces to the new player mechanics, has become my favourite FIFA (mechanically) ever.
The story of FIFA has always been the same; memes before release – huge player base at launch with hopes – 3 months in no one but FUT tryhards still online. The game has seen some positive changes this year that I personally enjoy this version of FIFA and I genuinely hope that they take all the good from the last 10 titles and plug it into the new gen console with great intentions. As I said EA does the right things at the wrong time, now take all those rights and make the new gen great, make FIFA great again… Use this title as a base because it is almost where we need FIFA to be, give us more AI and the ability to drive football rather than drive a video game, however, until then, FIFA20 is a great and competent title top finish off the Generation of consoles.
