Constantinople Withstands the Avar Siege

On July 28, 626, the Avars, supported by Slavic allies and encouraged by the Sasanian Persian Empire, tightened their siege of Constantinople, hoping to bring down the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. The city appeared isolated, but its massive Theodosian Walls and determined defenders proved an almost impossible obstacle.

Despite repeated assaults from land and attempts to coordinate with Persian forces across the Bosporus, the attackers failed to breach the city's defenses. The Byzantine navy prevented the Persians from crossing the strait, while the defenders held firm behind the walls.

The failed siege marked a major turning point. Constantinople's survival preserved the Eastern Roman Empire during one of its greatest crises and strengthened the city's reputation as one of the most formidable fortresses in history. The victory was later celebrated by the Byzantines as a sign of divine protection over their capital.

A Roman mould-blown glass beaker with honeycomb pattern from the 4th century AD. At the moment it is on display at @rijksmuseumvanoudheden in Leiden, on loan from a private collection. This glass was probably made in the eastern part of the Mediterranean, possibly in Syria or Egypt, but glasses like this one were spread all over the Roman Empire. This glass has a pattern of irregularly shaped hexagons. NEW MAP: Europe 310: Maximian’s Last Stand (July 310) https://buff.ly/2TMJFoo Maximinus Daza refused to accept the rulings at Carnuntum and demanded to be made an Augustus. Reluctantly, Galerius backed down, initially acknowledging Maximinus and Constantine as ‘Sons of Augusti’ then, after Maximinus threatened to rebel, recognizing them both as full Augusti in 310. That year Constantine faced his own problems when his father-in-law Maximian emerged from retirement in Viennensis and proclaimed himself emperor again.
