Ancient Iberian finds date back to the 8th century BC, and there are several archaeological remains of later Greek and Roman settlements. In Roman times the town was at first known as Astigi. During the Roman civil war Écija stood "firmly" at the side of Julius Caesar in the Battle of Munda.
This mosaic pavement (c. AD 200) depicts Bacchus driving a quadriga drawn by centaurs. Images of Leda and the swan, Orpheus and a nymph, Narcissus, Castor with a horse, Silenus, Pan, a satyr and a Maenad, as well as personifications of the seasons, surround the central emblema.
To create the illusion of the quadriga racing toward the viewer, the pictor imaginarius, who created the design for the mosaic, uses a low point of view and foreshortens the charging centaurs. This conspicuous display of pictorial skill assured the patron his money was well spent.
The mosaic was originally installed in the house of a wealthy Roman located in the city of Astigi, in the province of Hispania Baetica (today the Andalusian town of Écija). Excavated in the 1980s, the mosaic and many others found in the area are on display at the Museo Histórico Municipal de Écija.
