Mira Royal Detective
While looking through stuff on Disney plus (which appeared in my country mere four days ago), I was attracted by the image of a brown-skinned girl. This is how I discovered Mira Royal Detective. Basically, it’s about a girl who becomes the royal detective in a fictional country (city-state?) inspired by India.
Here are my thoughts on the show.
The show is visually appealing. It features beautiful brown-skinned characters, colorful clothes with amazing patterns and a lot of culturally significant elements. The food, the instruments and the architecture show Indian influences. It makes me happy, because representation is important.
Each episode is 22 minutes long and consists of two separate stories, 11 minutes long each. I suppose it’s a good thing, since many children have a problem staying focused for longer periods of time.
The show is very clearly directed at a younger audience. The main character asks many questions, takes notes and analyzes all the information she’s gathered. Her train of thought is served to the viewer on a silver plate, so to say. While an adult viewer might find this formula a little irritating, I suppose it holds an educational value for a child who has yet to learn critical thinking.
Another notable aspect of Mira’s character is her patience. When somebody questions her methods, she doesn’t lose her temper – even if the challenger is obnoxious or freaks out. Mira’s response is to calmly explain everything and provide reassurance when needed. In my opinion, this makes her a valuable role model for the young viewers. She teaches them it is okay to have emotions and that a little kindness goes along way.
It is also worth mentioning that a great deal of Mira’s cases do not involve malicious intent. When an item disappears, it’s probably because somebody unintentionally misplaced it. Even if the theft was intentional, the perpetrator is given the chance to confess and make amends. While a selected few characters qualify as the bad guys, most engage in illegal activities out of insecurities or poor judgement. The show thus demonstrates that getting into trouble doesn’t necessarily make a person evil, and that is an important lesson to teach.
There are a couple of things that appear slightly off. Such as a cow serving as a police officer. Though maybe the reason behind this was to make the appointment of a child for the role of the royal detective a little less sketchy. I don’t know. I guess we shouldn’t expect everything to make sense in a children’s cartoon.
Overall, Mira Royal Detective is not something I would watch for personal pleasure, but I will certainly let my future child watch it. Seems like the perfect introduction to the world of Disney shows for the youngest audience :-)
The Deep sea made by Neal Agarwal
Here's a cool way to travel the deap sea without the need of a submarine. The interactive webpage at https://neal.fun/deep-sea/ will have you traveling from the surface of the sea to the deepest explored area thousands of meters deep. Each zone also highlights the animals that inhabit or have the deepest known dive to humans documented. Made with love by Neal Agarwal is really well made and fun to engage in.

Please help us reach our Kickstarter goal to help us fund a project 4 years in the making! If you cant donate please share! We hope to give young people the tools to visualize a world we all deserve, a world where we love ourselves our neighbor and our planet. Representation matters, and with this story we have found that Black girls are often left out of empowering youth narratives. This project is led by Black queer people who believe that social justice and environmental justice are one in the same and the fight for liberation for all is wound up in these intersecting issues. The Balloon City Project (find us on Instagram and Facebook @theballooncityproject) has been working to bring community enrichment to our neighborhoods in the Bay Area, CA, via community led events like clothing exchanges, ocean clean ups, feeding the homeless, community garden work and building free little libraries. Please share and follow our journey to publishing this book. We hope to bring this book to you soon with your support. Thank you!
