“So--- what did you think?” Even after almost a year of being in the same town together (or more like realizing they’d been living in the same place all along) Natalie struggled to wrap her head around seeing Vera, again. After the way things transpired back in Missouri, and the state she’d been in when her baby sister left, it was something she never expected to happen again. Definitely not halfway across the country...
Unbelievable as it was, the universe decided to thrust them back into the same atmosphere, though, and this time Nat was trying to do things right.
It was slow at first. Months ago, when they’d ran into each other on a crowded street, she hadn’t been at her best, yet. Some days Natalie wasn’t sure if she even had a best anymore. Nobody could deny that she’d been doing better, though, and it showed in the tiny ring of two identical keys that sat on the table between them. Her keys. Keys that proved she’d reached a small point of stability in her life.
“I know it’s not much,” she admitted before a salty fry slipped past chapped lips, “but it’s kind of cozy, right?” They’d only just finished touring her new apartment before heading to lunch and, even though she had five years on Vera, she still desperately sought... approval? Validation? Even Natalie wasn’t completely sure. Her eyes were tight with unspoken anxiety while she read her sister’s expression. “Now that I left the pharmacy I’m not making as much each month, but I think it’s... nice.”
