I notice effort. Always.

Don't disrespect or minimise someone's efforts. Ever.
I have a friend who struggled through the year and still managed to pull up and achieve amazing grades.
But, contrary to what I expected, some people ended up feeling cheated or betrayed by that. They acted like he’d been faking confusion all year, even though he had been quietly working through everything. The same people he trusted couldn’t even be genuinely happy for him, which hurt like hell.
Point is, you never really know what someone went through. Even if they seemed like they might fail, inside there’s so much more: the endless climb, the fights along the way, the late nights, the stress, the spiralling wondering if they’d ever reach their goal. All of that matters. And when someone reaches it through hard work, celebrate it.
Their achievement doesn’t diminish yours.
And it sucks that so many people can't seem to understand that. What has our world become? Why must people hate on someone just because they suddenly climbed to the top after shuffling around at rock bottom? Why is the fact that a person suddenly becomes competition so threatening to people? Why must you feel wronged by someone's hard work?
The fact that this was done by friends to a friend of mine will always sting. The very people I thought would be happy for the person ended up resenting him instead just because he surprised everyone by being the top in our class for a subject.
I'll say it again because it needs to be said--someones achievement does not diminish yours, no matter how small yours is.
As tedious as it may seem, responding to EVERY message ... is important.
Just thinking out loud...
I have never believed people should be defined by the worst thing they have ever done. Human beings are far too complicated for that. We are all collections of mistakes, fears, bad habits, wounds, and lessons still being learned. Some flaws are so deeply woven into us that pulling them out feels like trying to unravel our own skin.
What matters to me has never been the mistake itself. It is what happens after. Whether you can look at the damage honestly. Whether you can admit that something inside you needs to change. Whether you are willing to do the slow, frustrating work of becoming better, even when progress is measured in inches instead of miles.
Because growth has never required perfection. It only requires effort. I can forgive the same mistake a hundred times if I can see someone fighting against it. But I cannot forgive someone who refuses to acknowledge it at all. There is a difference between being flawed and being unwilling to change, and only one of those things scares me.
I love when you listen. Not just hear me, but actually listen. When I tell you something that hurts, or something I need, and instead of defending yourself, you carry it with you. Maybe you do not change overnight. Maybe you do not get it right every time. But you try.
And I think that is all I have ever wanted. Not perfection, not immediate change, just the comfort of knowing my words do not disappear the moment I say them. That they matter enough for you to make an effort. That I matter enough for you to make an effort.
