Today is Tool Tuesday at Risa's Kluttered Kitchen. I thought I'd talk to you about some of my favorite tools for quick work in prepping healthy from-scratch meals. 1) egg slicer - I found mine at Walmart for $3. I use it mainly for slicing small to mid-size mushrooms and making quick work of slicing strawberries. It makes perfect slices every time. 2) good knives - you can get good knives at any price point. I have expensive ones and cheaper ones like the ceramic Pioneer Woman knives from Walmart (which come in sets and keep their sharpness after months of use). Whatever you buy should be comfortable in your hand and should be easy to sharpen. A dull knife is a dangerous knife. Remember that. 3) Silicone tools - I have many but my three favorites are mitts, lids and splatter shields that can be used to cover things in the microwave and can be used as a steamer in skillets. Very useful. The mitt I got at Walmart but I also have another from Bed, Bath & Beyond. Useful for removing pans from the oven or removing bowls from the Instant Pot. The lid is from Rachael Ray and it's great for microwave cooking but also keeps things warm or cold (hot things hot, cold things covered in refrigerator.) The splatter shields are Kuhn Rikon (not Joseph Joseph like I said in the video) and I got my first set at Sur la Table and my second set at a yard sale for $5. Love them for keeping the stove clean during frying but also useful as a steamer and as a microwave cover. 4) Mix 'n Chop from Pampered Chef. Useful for making potatoes but also for smashing tomatoes for sauce, mashing ground meats in skillets to break it up. Very good tool. 5) Microplane grater that folds, has a cover and a safety for grating garlic and ginger. Got this from Pampered chef too. It's the perfect tool for making light work of mincing garlic and your fingers don't smell afterwards. Comes in two sizes. Don't know if they still sell them. If they do, they are a must! 6) wooden spoons and spatulas - mainly for use in nonstick cookware. So important not to scratch the surface. To keep your pans in good condition. 7) measuring cups for dry measuring and for wet measurements - I have many sets - from vintage Tupperware that stack to Pioneer Woman sets in different patterns and colors. Love her small measuring pitchers. I have six of them in different patterns. So pretty. They brighten up the kitchen. They make me happy when I look at them. They are found at Walmart. Buy what you can afford - there is always classic Pyrex glass measuring cups. I have two - the 2 cup and the 4 cup. These are just some of my kitchen tools. What are some of yours? Please comment and let me know.
