While this year's Academy Award nominations offered a few surprises, here are 10 great films that were shut out of the Oscars race.

((also lets hear it for a year in which gina rodriguez and cynthia erivo each took on the two traditional michelle rodriguez roles available so she was freed up to play... a mom?))
8th Grade English
One time, in eighth grade, I was in my English class, and had a bit of a philosophical conversation with my teacher. And then I said, “I feel like I might know everything.” Which isn’t really what I meant, (I just felt like I had a strong understanding of everything) and then my teacher said, “Are you omniscient?” And then I asked him what omniscient meant... and we all had a good laugh 😂
Favorite Movies of 2018
Thanks to services such as MoviePass (soon to be RIP) and now AMC A List, I was able to see a lot of movies this year and often have multiple viewings of the same film.
Last year I did not rank my favorite films because there were so many great ones and I loved a lot of movies, this year is no different besides the fact that I will be ranking the movies I have seen in 2018.
#5 on my favorite movies of the year is Infinity War. Having all of the Marvel heroes in one film is a crazy concept and should never work, but it did amazingly so. Anthony and Joe Russo crushed it by creating a film that is well paced, full of action, heart, and a cliffhanger that has people digging through screenshots of the End Game trailer just to find a small clue as to what will happen to our favorite heroes.
Favorite Line from the film-
Dr. Strange: What master do you serve?
Star Lord: What master do I serve? What am I supposed to say? Jesus?
#4 goes to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. When the trailer first released for this I was excited to finally get a film adaption of Spider-Man with Miles Morales and then they showed the other Spider-Men that would show up in the film. This movie was incredible. The animation style was unique, it had funny moments (thank you Spider-Ham) and it was just a fantastic Spider-Man film. I’m definitely looking forward to the other movies they are planning within this universe.
#3 goes to Wreck It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet.
I loved the original Wreck it Ralph. When they announced a sequel I was a bit nervous because Disney sometimes phones it in with the sequels. My favorite duo leaving the arcade and heading to the internet also upset me because I loved seeing all the different video game properties that were in the first one. It wasn’t until I saw the panel for this movie at NYCC where I was finally super confident about this movie and how great it would be. The message of the movie was amazing and it resonates with everyone and I definitely didn’t expect that ending to be so emotional for me. While it isn’t better than the first one like I originally believed after watching it, it is super close and a fine successor to one of my favorite Disney animated films.
#2 is Searching
I absolutely loved this movie. One thing I really enjoyed is the concept of it being presented in different device screens that we use everyday. The story was also incredibly put together and the twist at the end had me surprised. It wasn’t until the second viewing of the movie where I picked up on the hints from the start of the movie that show the ending. I recommend this movie to anyone that likes a good thriller because it was fantastic.
AND MY FAVORITE MOVIE OF 2018 IS...
MARY POPPINS RETURNS!
The original Mary Poppins is a classic. Nothing can beat that movie and this movie does not try to. It is a sequel to the classic that takes place 25 years after the first film. This film is so beautifully shot and written. The songs are just as fantastic but I can’t see them being as iconic as those from the first. I saw this film 3 days in a row and I have been listening to the soundtrack ever since I viewed it for the first time. Emily Blunt and Lin Manuel Miranda crush their performances and are getting well deserved awards buzz because of it. This is a feel good movie that people of all ages will love.
There is a line towards the end of the film where the lady with balloons tells Michael that he has “forgotten what it’s like.” Michael responds by saying “forgotten to hold a balloon?” She says back to him “forgotten how to be a child.” And that is something that people need to focus on more especially in today’s world. It’s ok to laugh and have fun even if you’re an adult and that’s something that I live by everyday.

Im watching 8th Grade and that creep just got in the back seat wITH KAYLA AND IF HE TOUCHES HER IMMA MURDER HIM
I saw Eighth Grade last night and I want to make a master post but honestly every time I try to gather my thoughts I can’t because of one scene
There’s a scene between the main character and her father (in the trailer it’s the one where they burn the box and when he asks what’s inside, she says, “All my hopes and dreams.”) that was just so powerful. She just breaks down and releases all of her fears and anxieties to him, and then he starts out with the “I’ll never be disappointed” speech a lot of us have probably heard from our parents and have gotten the feeling that it was fake- no matter how genuine it is. It’s obvious that she isn’t believing him, and then he gets more and more earnest before stopping completely. Then he just quietly tells her how he sees her and counters every anxiety she told him she has with something he has seen her do and loves about her. Then they both start crying, and he hugs her tightly and just grips her like he’s afraid she’ll disappear and I started bawling because I’ve had a similar conversation with my own dad. It was just so well-acted and so raw and real and was beautiful that I still start crying when I think about it.
Just go watch the movie. Go support Bo. Go watch that scene, at least. It’s a beautiful movie and has so much heart and soul poured into it and it’s great.
