“If you’re not a Jedi, then what are you, Ahsoka Tano?” Bail asked. “Because to be honest, you still sound and act like a Jedi to me.” “I’ll let you know when I figure it out,” ― E.K. Johnston, Ahsoka
@giftober 2024 • DAY 20: CROWDED
The idea that there was a survivor out there filled his chest with equal parts anticipation and dread. Dread because the Empire would never stop hunting the Jedi and anticipation because a Jedi was a natural ally to his cause. -AHSOKA by E.K. Johnston
This week’s Maul episodes reminded me of the intro to chapter 9 of Queens Peril. When I listened to this on audiobook years ago, this was when I realized Maul is not all evil. It was a reminder that there is a lot going on underneath the anger. He is a heartbreaking character.
“The apprentice sat in the dark waiting for his masters call. He’d lingered in the shadows for years now. Ever since he had been chosen and it was starting to grate on his nerves. He knew that was intentional. It made him angry to wait. To be pushed aside while his master manipulated the galaxy without him. It made him feel unwanted. And worse, unneeded. And of course, that had made him angry too. Maul had mastered anger a long time ago. He’d wrestled with it in the deep caves of Dathomir as a child and he’d wrestled so loudly that it had drawn his master’s attention. Most would have let the anger burn them up. Most would have flared out in glorious rage, taking untold numbers with them into the blackness of the void. But not Maul. Maul was made for better things. And his anger was his fuel. He was still working on hatred. There was just so many things to hate. He hated the way the fog on Dathomir had clouded his vision and made the witches stronger. He hated the way he had been cast aside as a male child, until some off-worlder saw his use. He hated that same off-worlder for training him so astutely through such pain and suffering. And then not letting him lose to wreck the same upon the galaxy. Most of all he hated the Jedi. They hadn’t come for him. He didn’t know if they had sensed him and found him unworthy. Or if in his untrained state he hadn’t been worth their time. But it didn’t matter. They had ignored him. Passed him over for some unknown reason. And even though he had been better served by their neglect, he was more powerful with his anger than he could have been without it. He counted the days until he could make them pay.
The pieces of his lightsaber hovered in the air in front of him. Separated from the wholeness while he tinkered with the alignment for the hundredth time. The lightsaber was death. This too was something he had been forced to grapple for. Every part of it was stolen. And every part of it was irrevocably his. Paid for in blood and pain. Only some of which had been his own. He focused, calling on the well of darkness inside him. The part that had scared the younger witches and now delighted his master so much. With the ease of practice, he pulled the saber together. The parts aligning as easily as everything else in his life had not. When it was completed, he stretched out a hand, pressed the button and lost himself in the hum. If asked, maul would say he feared nothing. He was wrong.”💔

If I had a nickel for every time I read/heard/saw this disaster gay TM response in a piece of media I love, I’d have three nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened thrice.

My thoughts on the Padme trilogy book series…
So this is probably going to be a bit controversial so let me preface this by saying that I don’t think these are the worst books ever. There’s a lot I enjoy about these books and I did have a good time re-reading them as an adult (I was a teen when I first read the series). That being said I do have some criticisms. Overall, I’d give this series a solid 3/5.
1. It’s a lot of telling and not a lot of showing.
My biggest issue with this series is that the relationship between Padme and Sabe is frankly underdeveloped. We get a handful of scenes of them just being friends with each other and that’s great but by the time it’s revealed that they have a deep and soul-intertwining friendship it just doesn’t feel earned. Like logically I know that they would’ve spent more time together but EK doesn’t do a good job of showing that or adding the development of emotional intimacy into the scenes we do get. Like by the time Sabe is ready to die for Padme it’s like girl… yall have only known each other for a few months. But maybe I’m expecting too much emotional maturity from teens after all.
2. I loved the world building!
I enjoyed the world building of this in all the books. We get so many more details and it’s super fun to learn new things. The individualization of the handmaidens was very fun. I wish we would’ve gotten to know Padme more as a person and not entirely just as a ruler more though.
3. Some of the action isn’t very believable.
This is really only a problem in the first book but it’s pervasive enough to mention. Like I just can’t believe that Padme climbed a tree in the middle of a party and no one noticed. Either there’s enough bushes to cover her climbing from being seen or there’s not enough bushes to allow her to see the people she was spying on, you can’t have it both ways. That, or it wasn’t written clearly.
Overall, if you like Padme as a character you’ll enjoy these books and it’s at a simple reading level so it’s a nice relaxing read. Some Star Wars books use super specific technical jargon that isn’t obvious but there’s very little of that in these books. Would read again.
I’m finally reading the new Padmé novels by E. K. Johnston. So far, less than a third of the way in, 10/10 no notes. Incredible. Beautiful. We have Women supporting women, lesbians, arts, politics, unrelenting hope in the face of adversity, standing up to evil.
