MC: Aya Johansen, Kato
With 452 pages, and 9h10m of typical reading time (that can change according to my reading speed), this book is part of a series, The Slave Series, 1/5. At this point, I'm no stranger to the author, you should search the tags on here for her. Apparently, it's Elin's debut novel. Let's see how that goes.
This book has a warning: "[…] is intended for mature readers only as it contains graphic languages and sexual scenes of a violent nature", and don't try to locate Spirima, apparently, it's a made up country. Author says not to Google it.
I'm fairly thankful to the warning on the book itself, but damn.
A volunteer nurse goes to a country at war, where human rights are not a thing, meets someone her hearts beats for, gets kidnapped, beaten, sold, branded, almost raped. Has a bit of falling in love with captor number two when the 1st one ends up suicidal from getting what he wanted, them she manages to escape with her with her "captor number 2", Kato. And they do. From there, when they are back to their respective countries , a lot of things happen, a lot of rage and regrets; but they end up meeting, and the feelings are there. It's possible — it will totally happen — that Aya will turn out pregnant and married by the end of the book; it also introduces, at least, two more storylines for the next books in the series.
This double POV story ain't for everyone, but I'll skip reading Aston's story since the whole foundation of these stories is violence towards women. And I don't need to read about it. And yes, I have written this piece of review by chapter 23 (I just added the pregnancy and marriage of the couple; which truly, wasn't even a surprise).
Onto the next read!
MC: Lumi, Damian
Okay, this story, in the box set, begins on page 622 (Goodreads tells me it's 301 pages), with 6h39m left considering my speed to finish this box set. This is book 3/6 in Cultivated series. I placed this book on my current reading list on the 6th, but my headache skyrocket from out of the blue on page 5, so, officially began on the 7th – just for the record. Off we go:
We met Damian on book 1, he's Kit's brother and a massive flirt. Even Charlie couldn't escape his charms, but her eyes were on Charles. Anyway, Damian saved Lumi's life 11y ago, and apparently falling in love during distress is a thing for a then teen, and apparently, the crush wasn't a crush, but love. Considering when these two met, I'm uncomfortable. She was underage and he ought to have known better, yes? Some will shrug, some will not like it – if they didn't mention them knowing each other since her late teens, over and over again, I'd have enjoyed this story without feeling uncomfortable.
Prologue starts within 2w from the time Damian saved Lumi, and then we are back go present, 11y later.
This book has a lot of present time, a lot of memory lane passages that will make you understand their history. And maybe shed some light into what problems need to be overcome for them to thrive. There are far too many secrets, far too many lies, far too much love; and like the last book (Atlas and Jolene) these two end up engaged by chapter 17, making you - the reader - pick the pieces up, cause it was right after a hand-grenade going off.
I'm not heartless, and at one point I managed to induce self-amnesia, and I felt myself transition between pathetic-sad to pathetic overall, the characters, I meant. Highly intelligent vs highly trained, age gap, didn't save these two from being honest upfront. Little lies gave big complications.
While I understand the story taking place, I wonder if the author themselves had a hard time putting these two together. Damian comes across, even when things fit, as aware of their age difference, their different life stages, but when things comes to a close for them, eventually, it's like he's aware but at the same time saying fuck it, why didn't it happen sooner, when he knows the answer, read it and you'll know what I mean by that.
It irks me these teens turned adults refers to Saffron as a sister but Charles and Liv (who adopted them) as their names and not parents. No matter what. Which is fine due to the age difference, but still. Feel kinda wounded for these two, whom I liked the most in this box set.

Review at AudioGals: The Protector by Elin Peer, narrated by Noelle Bridges & John Masterson. I'm over at AudioGals with a review of The Protector by Elin Peer, narrated by Noelle Bridges & John Masterson. This was a DNF for me but the narration was not the problem.
