Lock Down by Aella Black
MC: Phoebe Atkinson
Ha! This is a first with the typical reading time of "less than 30min", with 276 pages. Book 1/3 in Supernatural Prison Trilogy. No idea on what I'm jumping into, cause that's my new motto – sometimes I read summaries, but not this time. And yes, I think that as of now, you know when I make the intro - before or after. If it wasn't crystal clear, this is before; next is next:
Phoebe is over there babysitting when she dies. The children are alive and well, Phoebe, not so much. She's dead. For a full 47 minutes. Until she comes back alive. Alive she is, and she's taken to a facility that conducts experiments and it's pretty much a prison. Everyone in there is a supernatural, everyone in there is going through a battery of tests, limits and whatnot. I suggest you look away, when you read what they go through.
While that happens, Phoebe makes friends. A whole later, an outside link to her shows up. No one other than her crush. Things start to get interesting, a plan forms, betrayal and love comes about, but also a death you didn't expect. Don't worry, you'll have someone to hate.
The next volume, according to the sneak peek, will be double POV: Phoebe and Xander. And dude, I won't even mention the whole cliffhanger and shock at the end. Read it at your own risk (it's a trilogy, so, two more, if you want to commit).
I'm off to a new one.
MC: Aya Johansen, Kato
With 452 pages, and 9h10m of typical reading time (that can change according to my reading speed), this book is part of a series, The Slave Series, 1/5. At this point, I'm no stranger to the author, you should search the tags on here for her. Apparently, it's Elin's debut novel. Let's see how that goes.
This book has a warning: "[…] is intended for mature readers only as it contains graphic languages and sexual scenes of a violent nature", and don't try to locate Spirima, apparently, it's a made up country. Author says not to Google it.
I'm fairly thankful to the warning on the book itself, but damn.
A volunteer nurse goes to a country at war, where human rights are not a thing, meets someone her hearts beats for, gets kidnapped, beaten, sold, branded, almost raped. Has a bit of falling in love with captor number two when the 1st one ends up suicidal from getting what he wanted, them she manages to escape with her with her "captor number 2", Kato. And they do. From there, when they are back to their respective countries , a lot of things happen, a lot of rage and regrets; but they end up meeting, and the feelings are there. It's possible — it will totally happen — that Aya will turn out pregnant and married by the end of the book; it also introduces, at least, two more storylines for the next books in the series.
This double POV story ain't for everyone, but I'll skip reading Aston's story since the whole foundation of these stories is violence towards women. And I don't need to read about it. And yes, I have written this piece of review by chapter 23 (I just added the pregnancy and marriage of the couple; which truly, wasn't even a surprise).
Onto the next read!
A Soured Engagement by Adam D. Rice
MC: Delilah LaRue
With 148 pages, with 2h57m of typical time read, I was in need of a comedy after ripping my eyes out, but I selected this with too many tears around, so – whatever. It says it's a series, but you know, so far it's showing 1/1 in Delilah LaRue, but who knows (copyright if 2021).
Okay, I'll tell you, it felt flat. The plot was nice, but the execution wasn't all that much. An elder (54y), it felt like we were dealing with elderly people over the age of 50; so this woman attracts death wherever she goes. So, when she ain't invited to an engagement party, she sends a couple on her stead. Also, the author seems to have a hard time sticking to the MC name. On the same page it would switch to her nickname, and it wasn't even someone else mentioning her. It made the whole thing difficult to plow through the end. Not to mention, everything felt like a mess. Sherlock Homes on the low.
Dang, I liked the summary. My hopes were high, but ... you know.
With a typical reading time of 5h42min, 283 pages, this final installment is here. I hope I don't cry. I hope I soon grab this series again and reread all thirteen books, to enjoy it all without too much waiting fuss. I think I'll even find myself a program to bundle the 13 volumes together and make it ONE book. But I'd need a computer for that, and I don't have it. Scrapping that idea for now. Id need to research first. Off I go.
I was a crying mess. Both euphoric and sad. And as always, the main attraction has its sideline stories, that I honestly always fail to realize that it will get completed while the main attraction happens. And gets completed too. I was wrong when I thought Charley would have her memories back once in exile, and her powers to a t. I loved seeing emotions radiating off Reyes that wasn't just anger and love. I was surprise by lies from Ubie tho, and what he is. I was sad when Reyes and Charley became what they became. I was proud girl stroke two deals in a matter of minutes with Michael. I was sad for Rocket, Blue, Strawberry – wasn't ready for the goodbye. Wasn't ready for many goodbyes, tbh. I guess the one that stroke hard was Gemma. Poor girl. What a twist. Also... damn, Cookie didn't even get the chance to say goodbye. I'm a mess. Did I write the whole plot without a care and suddenly ended the whole thing? Also Charley's mother? Damn, so many bombs going off; my tear ducts are overwhelmed. Where's Osh? Also, why did they need to make this sacrifice if Reyes, on previous book, bled on her and protected her against anyone wanting to do her harm? And how Ubie kept the secret if he's what he is? Why there was nothing pointing in that direction for 12 books past? But anyway, tear inducing. Shock inducing.
Onto the next, hopefully a comedy, it's what my heart needs – do I even have those? I don't know. Off I go.
MC: Aria, Cain, Dorian, Elias
Okay, I was supposed to read the next and final installment on Charley Davidson series, but I wanted a re-intro to the supernatural after reading about cults and traumas the past three books, and I picked this one at random at the top of my library gallery. According to About tab this is book 1/7 in Sin Demons series, with a typical reading time of 4h49m and 312 pages. Honest to God, most often I have no idea what type of book I'm selecting cause of the e-ink, monochromatic feel ok Kindles, so – whatever. I have embrace chaos too long along by not reading summaries at all, nor sharing them with you! Remember those times? Anyway, I had to start reading this book while it was connected to my damn mophie, so, hopefully that won't fuck up the battery life further.
The beginning felt a lot like Mission Impossible, and if you add demons and sex, this would be the book itself. However, taking the sex and demons away, the plot is good – but offers little answers or even a clue about the why's.
we know Aria has a shadow in her. We know she's eighteen. We know she found an Orb and intends to sell it. She's however captured by demons as transfer of payment. Ends up finding a couple of more relics of power these demons are after. However, in her haste, she ends up in the hands of a dragon, and the relics are in the possession of said dragon. The relic itself apparently would offer the demons their ticket home. But it kinda doesn't say how, doesn't go into the story of why Aria holds this very powerful shadow, or how her magic trick is connected to it. We just know she finds them. To be honest, the readers are as much in the dark as everyone.
If you want answers, you won't have them.
If you take the horny fantastic four main characters, the plot has interesting bits, it's entertaining, but you'd need the other books to even make sense of WTF is going on. Recommend if you have the patience to read a full damn story, otherwise, keep finding another book for yourself.
It also has another cover, but believe it or not, I don't remember if this one was it or the post cover was... anyways, it is here for you!
MC: Lumi, Damian
Okay, this story, in the box set, begins on page 622 (Goodreads tells me it's 301 pages), with 6h39m left considering my speed to finish this box set. This is book 3/6 in Cultivated series. I placed this book on my current reading list on the 6th, but my headache skyrocket from out of the blue on page 5, so, officially began on the 7th – just for the record. Off we go:
We met Damian on book 1, he's Kit's brother and a massive flirt. Even Charlie couldn't escape his charms, but her eyes were on Charles. Anyway, Damian saved Lumi's life 11y ago, and apparently falling in love during distress is a thing for a then teen, and apparently, the crush wasn't a crush, but love. Considering when these two met, I'm uncomfortable. She was underage and he ought to have known better, yes? Some will shrug, some will not like it – if they didn't mention them knowing each other since her late teens, over and over again, I'd have enjoyed this story without feeling uncomfortable.
Prologue starts within 2w from the time Damian saved Lumi, and then we are back go present, 11y later.
This book has a lot of present time, a lot of memory lane passages that will make you understand their history. And maybe shed some light into what problems need to be overcome for them to thrive. There are far too many secrets, far too many lies, far too much love; and like the last book (Atlas and Jolene) these two end up engaged by chapter 17, making you - the reader - pick the pieces up, cause it was right after a hand-grenade going off.
I'm not heartless, and at one point I managed to induce self-amnesia, and I felt myself transition between pathetic-sad to pathetic overall, the characters, I meant. Highly intelligent vs highly trained, age gap, didn't save these two from being honest upfront. Little lies gave big complications.
While I understand the story taking place, I wonder if the author themselves had a hard time putting these two together. Damian comes across, even when things fit, as aware of their age difference, their different life stages, but when things comes to a close for them, eventually, it's like he's aware but at the same time saying fuck it, why didn't it happen sooner, when he knows the answer, read it and you'll know what I mean by that.
It irks me these teens turned adults refers to Saffron as a sister but Charles and Liv (who adopted them) as their names and not parents. No matter what. Which is fine due to the age difference, but still. Feel kinda wounded for these two, whom I liked the most in this box set.
MC: Atlas, Jolene
Okay, this story, in the box set, begins on page 329 (Goodreads tells me it's 266 pages), with 13h12m left considering my speed to finish this box set. This is book 2/6 in Cultivated series. Off we go:
Expect a 11 year time jump. Expect not dealing with teenagers but adults. Traumatic adults. Epilogue shows 5 months later.
Atlas is a young man, rich, studying mind control. He's over there living his life, burying his traumas. When he hires Jolene, a psychologist, she studies cult survivors. It doesn't take long for Google to make an appearance and some private convos to happen. Some Super Bowl. Some Irish trip. Some surviving too. While book 1 had for more fun flirting, this one has a bit, but I couldn't connect to any attempt. Both characters are in their head too much. Both characters assume, until assumption has to take a ride, for actual conversation to happen without analyzing too much.
Other than that, it was a nice couple, a lot of trials to uncover and the promise on that age gap relationship runs strong. And yes, I'm about dreading it (he knew Lumi when she was a teen, and he an adult -- not meeting after they were both developed in their brains rubs me the wrong way; so I'll pretend she's over 33c just for my sanity).
Off we go, to the next one.
MC: Charlie, Charlie (aka Liv)
Okay, let me just say that this book is part of series (duh), but also part of a book set (of 3). This is book 1/6 in Cultivated series. With 219 pages, with unknown typical time to read, cause box set, however, box set itself is about 19h3min and 915 pages in total (for the three stories). And yeah, reviews are getting posted separately. At one point I thought I knew this author, but I think I got them confused. But that's okay. Please don't trust my memories from ages ago! Kidding. Trust me as farther you can throw me. Off we go.
Expect a five year jump from prologue.
When the Charles and Charlie of life meets in a cafe, flirting happens but awkwardness reigns. It comes as a surprise (not really, cause romance novel) when these two meet, not by change - by plan-, five years later with a mission: saving Charles from the cult fanatic he's joined a few months back. Expect growth from the overly shy man you met in early pages, and a slightly more confident Charles. He seems kind but lost, Liv is very loving and fun. Their dialogue is easy on the eyes too, I might steal a quote to apply IRL situations, cause sarcasm is my jam. There will be death. There will be redemption. There will be lots of children to care for. And these kids will have their own stories to tell. In so far, it's possible another time jump, so I won't be dealing with early twenties. I like the late twenties characters more these days. Or early thirties.
Let me speak more to the point: if you're in search of a happy ending while surfing the difficulties of brainwashing and cult behavior, a love story, and a story that promises so many books, this is for you. You'll love the boy. You'll love the girl. You'll love their love. You'll –, I mean, you might like the thrill of sitting at the edge of your seat for the conclusion. You may cry some (I didn't, I did get sad!). I don't know, it's up to you. I'm off to the next book!
MC: Daniella Carvingwood, Donavan, Syr, Brax
Not much info from the About tab, but what is shown is a typical reading time of 4h58m. This is book 4/8 in the Wolves of Chaos Valley series. I'm intrigued but also fearful. Let me read this, and then I'll return for the review next.
ps: on chapter two, the damn text was centralized. Drove me insane. FYI, Syr POV comes around chapter 8.
Okay, first things first, it felt like this book could be read as a standalone. If not, it did great work on world building, secrets, and love between 4 people. Gotta be honest, I did not pay much attention to ages, but at point, my mind automatically did the math and realized an early 20 was getting attached to: an early twenty, an early 30 and a late 30. If you have missed my rant on age gap relationships in real life, know that I am your supporter if the youngest party is around 30, usually okay within the generation (like, 10y gap at most, born in 80s, stay there – generational hole is never a good idea, take it from me!), but for ducks sake, early twenties are babies. Especially when age gaps are a thing. But anyway, besides that, cause the whole long lifespan of the supernatural kind I can turn my cheek on.
Dani is the daughter of the alpha, she's been training to rise in the ranks for 5ever. She has her best friend, Syr (short for Syracuse) to count on, and yeah, there's something between them, but she's dense – but don't worry, she's smart. Especially when he beats his heart out for her right when Donavan from a different pack, makes an offer her dad can't refuse. All in the name of safety, since there's a group gathering women to sell them out. Like, secondary plot. May I add she dislikes Donavan a whole lot? Don't worry, cause during the blood moon, they might mate.
Let me tell you tho, if you like shifter stories and always wanted a strong woman that won't give in to the overbearing man dangling his position/pole around, she's your girl. Her denial will last sometime, it will leave you impressed. Hey, at one point everyone gives in to the dessert.
I have mentioned two men so far yes? One kind, one annoyingly handsome, but let me tell you about Brax. Whole damn. I'll leave you to discover him. He was the one I was the happiest for by the end of the book!
I think I have said too much and I don't want to spoil it further. But just know that, Dani will have to be even stronger, cause DAMN, girl.
MC: Mai Fairchild
This trilogy has been sitting for who knows how long on my Kindle, but it has finally shown its first page, out of 240. With the typical reading time of 3h24m. So, piece of cake. This is book 1/3 in Moon Marked series.
If you'd like to see fight scenes, this book is for you. If you'd like to see a kitsune pair up with a werewolf, this book is for you. If you'd like to see a character make several mistakes on loop, this book is for you.
Mia is a teacher, moonlights as an arena fighter and it's doing her best to make her sister's education happen. But this unruly kitsune, will give her sister far too much trouble. Not to mention, there's a social service guy threatening the sisters bond and whatnot. But he isnt the only problem available, many more will show, and so will secret.
It's entertaining, but I thought everything was too tangled. Too many shots being fired, not many targets getting hit. Oh, and she hears the voice of the dead. I mean just her moms. But still. And yes, she will team up with the werewolf, but at what cost? And what's next? Well, little ones, only the next book can answer all that.
But I'll leave you all to you own devices, cause I have more books to mark as read. See you next!
MC: Cat McKenzie
The A Cat McKenzie Novel has 5 books, this is its first. With a typical reading time of 3h13m and 230 pages. One ought to be entertained for the afternoon when you can't have a siesta. So, let's see how things go in the next paragraph, the real review. However know that I managed to read this book while sustaining a hell of a allergic reaction with a sinus attack on the side; so, if the review feels like dread all over, it's because it leaked into my writing.
And entertained I was. Cat is human (ish, I think). She's a cop transferred to the supernatural unit, and damn, her partner is sex on legs (aka Incubi). The poor girl is a literal ignorant on the matter of supernaturals, like us readers, so, you'll have to hitchhike a ride with her while solving one problem and finding more when available. You'll go to kickboxing classes and a lot of hospital visits, a magical sword following you around, and the promise of a romance with the partner. But alas, let's allow the main character open the puzzle created for her while we read some written words on that matter. Also, please enjoy the sarcasm, which was lovely, and the sense of humor, which will make you jet through the pages on a Sunday afternoon.
And yes, damn, one more book marked as to-read. My poor damn wallet.
MC: Paige Harrison, Aiden Samuels
With a typical time to read of 2h36m, with 222 pages (angel number, coincidence of what?), book 4/10; so I'm going on blind and will probably remain blind, and will harbor some sort of betrayed sentiment cause I was unaware I was picking a book almost half way into the series itself. The nagging question: "what am I missing?"
And goddammit, I did feel lost for a good while.
Paige goes to a meeting where she's supposed to gather information for her popp that would help destroy the Ghost clan. Problem is, this shifter found her mate there. And a fantasy like plot ensue, and suddenly she learns she's been under a hell of spell making her hate people with all her might. Not to mention the things she's lost due to that. As her memory returns, once the spell is broken, she's a different woman. Aiden is there in a matter of days, loving her and claiming her.
This fallen angel was a bit easier to like for me, but the rest was absolute annoying. I felt lost. This isn't a book to read if you haven't read the other ones. It felt like a big chunk was missing, and for that I disliked most of the characters. The plot was somewhat interesting, but I'll need time to pick the previous or next volumes, if I so decide to spend time in this world.
ps: I did like Simon, tho. He's also the next book!
MC: Eva Rae Thomas
I have this book, Say You Love Me, mainly due to it being part of a book set (book 3-4), so I began this book when the third ended. I had the third book off the set too, just to explain this further, while having my fingers crossed, in hopes it's understandable explanation to this horrible intro! The footnote says 4h31m left in book, so let's pretend this is the correct information.
As a side note: I thought I had no more new books to read, but I was wrong! The cloud setting wasn't ON, so my kindle only showed what I downloaded last on 4G data, which I only selected a few books to read, not the whole thing. No further ado: I do have more, so, YAY. , and or not: I review onI need to check this out on a real desktop computer, not the kindle, not my phone. A real 13 inch screen or bigger!
Somewhat rant, somewhat review: while I still believe she can see patterns when most ignore, I still think she's a terrible mother, and I'm starting to think she may have mental issues. Cause damn, girl! Give Matt some TLC. Put your kids in their place, they walk all over you. At least, you won't have your ex-husband bothering you anymore. But for the love of all, sit with your heart, and figure out what it is that you want! And communicate. Express yourself. This ain't no paranormal story, no one can read minds!! And then, there's the whole thing, Eva Rae is a damn former FBI agent, and she still goes around and about pretending she still has a badge.
Now, with that out of the way, review:
Our bad guy is a teen with a rare disease; but fret not, he has friends. Friends who don't care. He sold a nice bargain for us readers, while we were unaware of things, which made the whole, "why would you kill or threaten your best friend?", and folks – it might have been because of a girl. But also his grandmother. His father. His dear mother too.
If you like plot twists, and wow moments, this book will provide you that, as long as you can block Eva Rae issues. Familial and romantic. Turn a blind eye to that, and focus how she gets the puzzle in place. Oh, last book she found her sister. This book, she finds her dad, grandmother, and brother. One major death, that will leave you a bit stunned, more for the kids – but he was difficult to like. I'm stunned and indifferent, is that possible? Poor kids, poor bunny.
Oh, and by the way, so many chapters!
The Trouble with Twelfth Grave by Darynda Jones
PS: while I have this book, this is a loan. Once it's completed, it will disappear from my library on Kindle. I will set a reminder on here for when the time comes: TO BUY MYSELF A COPY.

Anyway, this saddens me, but I'll just keep going. This is a series, I have reread before (not the last or this volume), so I will buy it. Oh man, I wonder, will my comments and highlights transfer to a bought copy or what? Damn. I shall google this if I remember it, cause the more and more I access google the more I forget why I was there in the first place (as long as its the same edition etc, the highlights will be there when I purchase said borrowed book. For this info stays on the cloud, according to a Reddit answer on Kindle subreddit).
Well, without the About tab, I can only glimpse the foot notes on Kindle telling me 4h36m left in book; this is book 12/13. Started on Feb 29, 2024, 5:10pm. Ended on March 1, 1:10am. I had to pause a couple of times (dinner, throne, headache, nausea and vertigo), and they lasted a while.
Reyes going weird, check; Q&A Investigations, check and cute; Ubie being the perfect uncle in the rise of hell, check; Osh being a flirt, check; Garret abs, kiss and broken neck, check. Beep's love, check. Meeting God, check (just as tight lipped as his brother). What else? Oh yes, me losing my shit laughing crying at 12:10am because Cookie was playing homeless striptease? Ducking check.
Since I read the previous book and this one, the beginning was a tad repetitive, but great for those who actually had to wait months until the next installment. It picks up where it left off, adds a few important dialogues and plot, while Charley is over there using ghosts as her therapists (where is the actual dead shrink from the previous book, I don't remember her going into Charley). Prepare yourself for a version of Reyes from the first book in the series. And a new version of Reyes by the end of it, at least THAT part didn't end in a cliffhanger.
If you're inquiring about Q&A investigations, that's Quentin (Amber's deaf boyfriend) and Amber's new PI business. Apparently Aunt Charley and Cookie are good examples and worth of following their footsteps, except they might deal with the living. But Amber will leave you in tears, and the feelings from those watery eyes will be complex and opposite. Prepare your panties.
Speaking of panties, Jesus – not like Charley needs Garret's keys to enter his home, there will be some appreciation and maybe a kiss to entice a god's jealousy. And also a few broken necks. The first and second time will leave you teary eyed, the other times you will expect it.
Cookie will have her girls named. I thought that was important. She will also make laughing tears a thing. Suggest you read this part while the day is out still, cause at night you might concern your household.
You will finally get a good look on that awful evil priest. The god glass broken, a prison unleashed, burnt friends, blood art project. Ugh, among other things. You will definitely want a Reyes for yourself – GROWTH. I honestly felt Reyes had more dialogue in this volume that actually added some sort of growth to his brooding and whatnot. So, yay for that!
The ultimate sacrifice will take place and we couldn't even enjoy the reaper and her husband for even a full damn page before exile happened. Good thing is, when she's back, Charley will have her memories back, full knowledge and one hell of a mission. Can't wait.
Spoke (wrote) too much. But it will definitely help me when the times comes to dive into the next and final installment.
One massive confession: I have NO idea what these characters look like anymore. It's been too long. Nor their ages. My brain has become mush.
See you all on the next book, whenever that may be.
Oh boy, if you ever visit this review on Goodreads you will have the best laugh of your life. But I'll sum it down for you here. So, picked it on kindle and it opened. Thing is, it was a dub copy. Each paragraph was on a new page and I let my status say, "nope. I'll get this book sometime soon", so I kinda turned WiFi on and typed on the title and found the actual copy I bought straight from Amazon. And so, I began reading again, but not before making a spectacle of it all. Mind you, I added this book to my to-read list around 2016, it was before I turned 30 and my mind went mush, at 35. Anyway. Typical reading time is about 5h50m, 321 pages. Book 11/13.
Memo to me that Reyes name is Rey'aziel/Rey'aziken, Charley/Dutch is Elle-Ryn-Ahleethia. Like, Darynda can't expect ME to remember all that, she's lucky I remember who Garret is. But these names, come on!
Humor, check; Reyes, check; Cookie, check; Amber, check: Ubie, check; shit on the side that got me rolling my eyes and asking for more, check; deaths that could have been avoided, check; deaths that you wish could be restored to life, check; cryptic men, check! Me having a hard time remembering details from years ago, big FUCKING CHECK. But any of this stopped me from consuming this book in alarming hours? Ha! I guess the humor, the t-shirt slogans, they make things go by faster.
I wonder how much I should say about this book? Like, half of it I spent trying to remember what I read long ago, and the other was trying its best to just store such new income of information for the next book, whenever it happens.
But hey, Charley has learned to materialize/dematerialize, become invisible/visible, heal, mark/unmark -- she ain't proactive about it tho, she either does it by chance or someone is teaching her. She misses her daughter. She didn't visit her this time. But she did some spoilers for Reyes and Amber about Osh. Now, it's muddled if part of it happened last book, Amber bit was now. Oh and Reyes adopted parents who gave him away: dead. FU, this is the best spoiler available.
I felt like the book ended abruptly, but that's just my gluttony speaking. It was wild, it was off-charts. I wonder if the new Reyes will be less caging and more open. I love the guy, but if I were dealing with a guy such as him, I'd have booted him eons ago, God/Demon/Fallen Angel be dammed.
MC: Jillian St. Claire and Grimm
While I felt like these books from the Highlander series could be read as standalone and maybe out of order, this one is just absolute nicely put together since we have met Grimm. This is book 2 in the series, ePub turned mobi.
Dammed be the names, Jesus. Gavrael Roderick Icarus McIllioch, aka Grimm, is a berserker, in love with a gal, and avoiding his remaining family like the plague.
Jillian is a smart, kind woman whose parents are in sort of a hurry to wed her off since she's been saying she'd rather go to the nunnery. But her childhood crush is back, and she realizes that her crush is actually love. But while their love blossom to wedding bells, or the journey itself, Grimm is drawing attention that can board on dangerous for others around him. But hey, let's not forget that while Grimm has her heart, her parents plotted to have two more suitors; but, well, sparks will fly even before the 50% mark. And even more surprises will come.
Yes, didn't say much, but you know: totally worth it.
