Happy birthday #EmmetTill #NeverForget #RestInPeace #RestInPower #July25 Like a stone skipping across a pond and making ripples along the way, our lives, as small as they are compared to the greater Universe, also make ripples and waves out in the ethers. Everything, and everyone, for that matter, is connected. From the tiniest atoms in the tiniest grains of sand to the brightest stars in the galaxies, I believe there is a greater Purpose behind it all. Call it God. Call it the Universe. Call it science. Call it whatever. Just acknowledge It however it resonates with you. That being said, each of us, are born into this human experience with a purpose to be of service. As Shakespeare once said, "all the world's a stage and all the men and women merely players." This whole human experience is like the longest running play in the cosmos and each of us have specific roles (or several depending who you ask) to act out in this play. That being said, I'd like to thank the spirit of Emmett Till for your life, your sacrifice, your pain and suffering and the lessons taught to future generations. (Sound up) Took a break from writing and recording and all the busyness of life to reckon with When They See Us. It’s a story about a tragedy that happened while I was growing up, that has haunted me since. Please take time away from whatever you consider to be important, and be with this story. • I was worried that it wasn’t a documentary. Now, I’m so happy that Ava DuVernay had the tenacity and vision to tell the tale that no documentary really could have: A story of what is really lost when we stay stuck in White Supremacy. It’s not just political or philosophical. It’s actual lives. I get so sad seeing how I/we keep forgetting, and/or giving up. The best art and ideas remind me, and help me keep going. • As for the hatred / ignorance / apathy that led to this disaster (and #tamirrice #ericgarner #sandrabland #trayvonmartin #emmettill and the endless list), Ava says it perfectly: • • • “It lives off of our ignorance, and we can no longer be ignorant.” • “Our real goal is to be able to say, “Go America, let’s do this, let’s change this.” • “And you can’t change what you don’t know. So we came together to show you what you may not know.” • “Now that you know, what will you do? How will you change this?” • “That’s our goal.” • • • She said that in When They See Us Now, which is a good companion for processing the feelings that the film brings up. The cast speaks, and most importantly, the men that got profiled, framed, and imprisoned as teenagers get to speak. Their wounds are still evident. They are the embodiment of what the insane concept of Whiteness has done to the world. They keep telling their truth. All the lies have been revealed. The prosecutors, the detectives, the politicians, the businessmen, the citizens. Our unjust system has been exposed (again). The fact that too many of us have trouble truly believing this history is why it keeps happening. Other people are living the nightmare that Yusef, Kevin, Antron, Korey, and Raymond survived.
