Common Module - AY24.25 CTS A/ Week 03 Emotional Intelligence
Q1. We talked about “Self-management”, “Self-awareness”, “Empathy” and “Relationship management”. Which aspect do you think you are strongest at, and which is something you should try to improve? Discuss with reference to today’s activities, and even your Studio collaborations.
After today’s activities, I gained a clearer understanding of emotional intelligence and how to apply it in my life. The School of Life highlights that emotional intelligence is essential for managing emotions and improving relationships (What is Emotional Intelligence?). These insights will enhance my teamwork and overall performance in the diploma course.
California State University, Monterey Bay states that relationship management, involving communication, conflict resolution, and trust-building, is an essential part of emotional intelligence (EQ: Relationship Management). I recognize that my weakest area is relationship management. As an introvert, I often feel anxious interacting with new people. During small group activities, my heart races, and I feel flushed when sharing my thoughts. Today, I felt shy initially but became more comfortable as the discussion continued. Working with new group members in the studio is challenging, but I aim to be more proactive. Shopper Approved notes that strong relationship-building is vital for growth (5 Tips for Improving Your Relationship Management Skills). I will continue to practice and improve.
On the other hand, my strongest area is self-awareness. I can recognize how emotions affect me and manage them before they escalate. Psychology Today states, “being self-aware enables individuals to better navigate stress and respond rather than react” (The Importance of Self-Awareness). In today’s group activity, I quickly reflected on my feelings, becoming aware of how they influenced my mindset. In the studio, I notice emotional shifts, especially when overwhelmed. At those times, I take a break or meditate to refocus. I will maintain this strength and continue to apply it in the future.

I find the video Inside Out - Emotional Intelligence by Alex Kneier (2016) quite interesting because it creatively explains emotional intelligence using characters from the movie Inside Out. Each character personifies a specific emotion, helping to illustrate how our emotions interact and influence our behavior and decision-making.
