to all non spanish speaking content creators out there, I beg you:

do not use the term “mija”

“Mija“ is a term your mom uses

“Mija“ is a term your grandma probably uses 

why? because it is “mi hija” shortened, as in “my daughter”. It is not really a term your romantic partner would use when referring to you. In my opinion, it´s kinda cringy and a turn off

remember, just because you saw an endearment in another language it doesn’t mean it can be applied to all situations

it’s a little deppressing when there are a lot of prettier endearments out there:

amor, mi amor = love, my love

cielo, mi cielo = heaven, my heaven (?) or a placeholder for darling

corazón = heart

tesoro = treasure

vida, mi vida = life, my life

I actually really liked Marina Satti’s Γιατί πουλί μ’ because it reminded me of my Γιαγια so much. She used to always call us that, and I found out recently from my priest that it’s a term of endearment used primarily among the Pontians (and then he told me about other regional terms of endearment).

Nice!! Yes it is a term of endearment but in Greece everyone uses it, mainly in the form of "πουλάκι μου" ☺️

Endearment Terms

Carry On Countdown Day 8

Snowbaz Length: 371 words Genre: Fluff AN: When I came up with this at 2 am last night I though the prompt was Pet Names. Not quite the same but I hope this still fits.

BAZ

“Oh hi there, love! What’s such a handsome boy like you doing out in this cold?” Simon says from behind a shrub in the front yard. 

I stop on the frosted walkway up to our house. Confused by the question I attempt to answer. “I went out to get groceries. You-” I start as I walk around the bush to get a better look as my husband. Then I realized.

Snow is petting a little dog in our front yard. It must be a neighbor’s, it had a yellow collar and tags. Sensing me behind him, Simon stands up and turns. His face is rosy and beaming. 

“Oh Baz, you’re home. Oh! Food!” His eyes go straight to the bags in my hands. I blush as much as vampirically possible; then clear my throat.

“Yeah, I’m back. I thought…” I looked down at the small creature nuzzling into Simon’s jeans. 

Now it’s Simon’s turn to blush. “Oh. did you uh-” He fiddles with his wedding ring. “-hear all that um gushing I did for the puppy?”

I can’t help but smile. “Yes. But I thought you were. Well, I didn’t realize you were talking to an animal.” I feel silly. Yet also warmed by the fact that over the years I’ve become so accustomed to Simon’s baby voice and pet names directed at me. 

He giggles a little. His breath visible in the air. Then Simon reaches down to pet the creature at his legs. 

When he’s done he steps closer and wraps his arms around my neck. “Well,” He says, our breaths mingling in the cold. “What is such a handsome boy like you doing out in this atrocious weather?” I’m pretty certain I taught him that word.

We both wear incredibly soft smiles. Simon leaves a light kiss on my lips after running a hand across my cheek. 

“I could as you the same thing.”

I reach to wrap an arm around him but remember the groceries I’m holding. We laugh a little. I can’t resist kissing him to taste joy on his lips. 

After a few more indecently sappy kisses in our front lawn I suggest we go in to warm up. Simon takes the dog with him.

Just curious, what are some cute nicknames/terms of endearment in Greek? Like, things you’d call your girlfriend, “honey” or “sweetheart” or something similar.

There is also the sound "vre" which is used to playfully call someone very close to you. Like "vre my baby, why did you do this?" "Vre Maraki, what brings you here?"

As you might have noticed we also make diminutives of names. Maria -> Maraki, Sofia -> Sofaki/Sofoula, Kostas -> Kostakis etc. (Send an ask if you want specific names)
