I truly wish we had better things to celebrate in 2021. I hope we can get to the point where we no longer have to sit at the edge of our seats during verdict readings. The legal system was built to protect the racists and white collar criminals. We need to amend EVERYTHING and start over. This is an example of the heartbreaking real-life effects of hate crimes and discrimination against Blacks and the mental and emotional impact, beyond just physical, that disproportionate police brutality can bring about. This Twitter post from @brycetache is extremely telling, as he is a White man whose son is Black, and thus fears for his life in times of heightened racial tension in light of many recent spates of police brutality toward the African American community. We need to work towards equality and abolishing racial hate crimes and police brutality towards those from the Black community so we can safeguard a happy, peaceful future for all regardless of race.

We're so horrified by the hate killings on the Max train yesterday. We are also so proud to live in a place where people stand up to help... in this case when the Muslim women on the train were being verbally attacked. And also very happy the perpetrator didn't have a gun, which could have done more damage. We hope that people continue to stand up in kindness and for human rights until hatred is eliminated, or at least super far in the closet. Let's make Portland a hate free zone. There's this perception of the gay male gender... a perception of a male, that happens to be homosexual... Whether he may like it or not, has conjured up a reputation over the past decade or so for apparently being sex addicted, "only talking to you cause he wants to fuck you" (says straight female)! SWANA-LA STATEMENT ON ISLAMOPHOBIA AND ANTI-SWANA RACISM

The mission of the Southwest Asian & North Afrikan (SWANA) Collective is to advocate for our SWANA communities on both a local and global scale. We are a group of community members and students of different backgrounds and faiths, committed to promoting progressive, conscious, political and cultural ideals through educational events, action-oriented campaigns, and healing spaces. We are in solidarity with all oppressed peoples. Our collective is geared towards those of SWANA background, but its programs are open to anyone.

SWANA-LA is outraged at the ongoing Islamophobia and anti-Southwest Asian/North Afrikan racism that continues to take place in the United States and Western Europe. The murders of Yusor Abu-Salha, Razan Abu-Salha, and Deah Barakat in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, are a tragedy, an act of terrorism, and a prime example of how unsafe American society has become for Muslims, Southwest Asians, North Afrikans, South Asians, and others who fall victim to the collective criminalization of the racialized “Muslim.” In addition, the fact that these young people were of Palestinian and Syrian descent makes this event so much more political as their ancestors’ countries experience continuous violence and bombing, directly and indirectly, by the United States government.

SWANA-LA demands for the immediate trial of the suspect, for the recognition by the American and Western media of how the victims’ ethno-religious backgrounds played a direct role in their murders, and for local governments and community coalitions to immediately develop strategic plans to ensure the safety of people of Muslim, SWANA, South Asian, and other backgrounds who are likely to be targeted and wrongfully classified as terrorists.  

Lastly, but most importantly, SWANA-LA would also like to end by shedding light on Yusor’s, Razan’s, and Deah’s beautiful and vital contributions to society and our local and global communities as a whole. As family members and friends have expressed, these three Muslim students deserve the legacy of generosity, kindness, and brilliance. Recognizing their community work and volunteerism with various populations, including people who are homeless and Syrian refugees, should be how we remember and honor them. We will not let their deaths go in vain. Let us continue their legacies by fighting for justice, by giving back, and by showing kindness and love to all those we come into contact with. Rest peacefully, Yusor, Razan, and Deah -- you are all free.
