He still got burned and all, but it could‘ve gone way worse. After Sun got control over the body, Moon was gone.

My Untitled Goose Game Headcanon (Ending Spoilers)
So the fact that the Model Village at the end is faithful to the layout of the actual village, down to the fact that there is a tiny Model Village in the Model Village has a very important implication. The model castle Goose tears down to steal the bell from should have a full scale counterpart near the village itself.
So my theory is, the Goose was flying near the full sized castle's bell tower one day, just as the bell was being rung, and the loud sound startled them and scared them right out of the sky. Ever since, they've been too traumatized to fly, and the business with the bell collection is a way of working through that.

Super Mario Odyssey’s Ending
The ending sparked a lot of controversy for sure. If I were to change the ending, I suppose this is how it would go.
It goes accordingly, until Bowser hops over to aggressively push Mario for Princess Peach’s hand. Mario, unexpecting such a force, is whisked away because he is on the moon. Princess Peach is personally offended and kicks Bowser in the butt. Mario is in awe of her quick actions, and Princess Peach drags Mario with her to the balloon.
Princess Peach then kisses Mario on the nose to reference Mario 64. They get married, perhaps?
