Repost from @black_history_buff_777 • Ever heard of the unfortunate story of Martinsville Seven? Read this! The Martinsville Seven were a group of Black men executed in 1951 after being convicted of raping a white woman. On the evening of January 8, 1949, Ruby Stroud Floyd accused 13 black men of raping her while she passed through a Black neighborhood in Martinsville, Virginia. These accused men who had no real criminal history soon became known as the Martinsville Seven. Most of the men were between 18 and 20 years old and worked as laborers in small-scale furniture factories and warehouses. At age 37, World War II veteran Francis DeSales Grayson was the oldest of the defendants. Not all of the defendants were able to read the confessions they signed, and none of them had a lawyer with them as they were questioned. Under threats that they would be released to a lynch mob, each confessed to involvement in the rape. By early 1951, legal strategies to save the Martinsville Seven were exhausted and the NAACP turned towards a public relations campaign. Despite campaigns, editorials, and local vigils, newly-installed Virginia Governor John S. Battle refused clemency. After a succession of perfunctory trials before all-white, all-male juries, each was convicted and sentenced to death. They were executed in 1951 in the largest mass execution for rape in U.S. history. On August 31, 2021, the state of Virginia granted posthumous pardons to all seven men, 70 years after their deaths. tag someone that needs to read this! Today I celebrate the birthday of #MeToo movement founder, Tarana Burke, born September 12, 1973
In this TED Talk, I can hear the weary in her voice and feel it in her body language. She talks of being numb from recent events at the time, specifically the Supreme Court nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, despite much evidence and gut-wrenching testimony from women who had nothing to gain from speaking up.
“Numbness isn’t always absence of feelings…sometimes it’s an accumulation of feelings.”
I remember feeling the same way. For me, it’s an accumulation of feelings so heavy that it sometimes feels like I can’t move, can’t speak, can’t breathe.
I also appreciate her clarification of the original intention of the Me Too movement. It is meant to give voice for all sexual assault survivors and is not a witch hunt directed at men. She says 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys are sexually assaulted every year.
It’s time to reclaim the conversation and stop this cycle of abuse! I vow to continue to use my voice to help others find theirs and keep supporting those who have the courage to speak up and keep fighting.

Feels good. Haven't watched a single snap of this NFL season and this brotha #colinkaepernick is a catalyst in helping me take this stand to/for myself. I love sports: basketball, football and baseball have always been core to my heart, and that hasn't changed just because of the stand I am taking against THIS league. He became the final straw for me inaking the decision to no longer be entertained by a league that: empowers/employs rapists & sexual assaulters; cultivates a hierarchy of racial bias in ownership, management, coaching and player position; and most egregiously, continues to suppress research that proves players are leaving the game brain damaged as opposed to embracing the research and adjusting the game. I'm encouraged by seeing the ratings affected after this first week, some of that attributed to people who believe what I do, others for whatever they believe that may be counter to me... I don't care. My stand is contributing to hitting this corporation where it hurts, and I look forward to seeing some progress made on the issues core to my boycott.
