Ulfric slowly loses Eryn's respect over time but one incident really cements it.

During the war, there's imperial assassins who come after Eryn. To keep his best asset beloved soldier safe, Ulfric orders her to stay in Windhelm for a bit.

Literally everyone protests this, but Ulfric DOES outrank all of them, so... guess she's to stay put. Eryn HAAAATES this.

Well, while she's in the city, there's yet another murder. And this time, it's one of Eryn's friends, Susanna. The guards tell her to stay back, don't get involved, they're busy enough, and they sarcastically tell her if SHE can solve it she's welcome to.

Eryn goes to Jorleif, who admits that the guards all prioritize the war and don't listen to him. And of course she's upset that no one seems to care about this, and she desperately needs something to do.

Eryn goes through the normal questline, following her hunches and instincts. She notices instantly that it's like some sort of ritualistic killing, based on where the killings are. When she investigates Hjerm, she finds the murder scene (and the amulet).

She brings the info to Jorleif as she goes, who is genuinely grateful for her help. He didn't not care, but he couldn't get the guards to care. He recommends she ask Calixto, since he seems to love weird bullshit.

Calixto instantly sets off Eryn's alarm bells. Something about him just strikes her weird. Especially since he keeps trying to insist that she sells him that necklace. Which she doesn't do, because it's part of an active investigation. And he's being WEIRD.

But she does listen to him that Wuunferth is knowledgeable about things like necromancy. So she goes to talk to Wuunferth.

He, of course, informs her that no he doesn't do necromancy, he has the nickname "The Unliving" bc he's stupid old. But Eryn explains that she wasn't accusing him, she doesn't care about what college he went to, and she just wants information.

Wuunferth softens, and they compare notes. He's also quite surprised when she uses magic as a way to visually illustrate her points. She always forgets that people don't seem to think magic and swords can coexist.

So, they realize the pattern, the way these murders are happening, and where the murderer is going to strike next. They agree to set a trap. Eryn would make great bait, but everyone knows who she is and that she's dangerous.

So, the night of the next murder, she stays hidden with some illusion magic from Wuunferth... And a man jumps out at Arivanya. Eryn saves her and knocks down the murderer. It's revealed to be Calixto, of course. But when he tries to jump at Eryn after feigning a surrender, she just fireballs him in the face.

The city thanks her, sincerely. She's avenged the murdered women, and managed to solve a serial killer case.

Wuunferth, especially, thanks her. He didn't know people suspected him, and he's glad Eryn had the sense to come talk to him before accusing him.

As a thank you, he enchants her rapier for her, free of charge. He gives it enchantments he thinks fit her: Fire damage, like her favorite spells, and a health absorbing property, so she'll always have a chance as long as she can swing a sword.

She thanks him and picks up her sword, which she names Redwing after its new red glow. But it's all bothering her. Something about this just felt off.

She looks to where Ulfric is sitting, and makes a face. She doesn't get why she feels so... angry, almost. Angry at him.

Wuunferth says that happens to everyone around Ulfric, eventually. He says things that people believe in, he fights a cause worth fighting, so people like him at first. But sooner or later, everyone gets tired of him.

Eryn realizes it's because he didn't care about his city, or the fact that people were dying. He didn't care. At all. Jorleif tells her that's just normal for Windhelm, hence why he was trying to put the investigation together.

Eryn still doesn't seem to quite get it. She feels upset with herself for being upset. That's the man she's fighting a war for, right? So why does she suddenly dislike him so much?

Wuunferth and Jorleif gently explain it to her.

Ulfric is selfish and short sighted.

Eryn is not.

That's why she doesn't like him.

eryn taught tommy how to shoot a bow and arrow and tommy taught eryn how to swim and they lived in a tiny house in a village together and went fishing and eryn used to be the one to fend off mobs for them before tommy learned how to properly fight and they’re just Kids. they’re just kids, and they want nothing but a home and a family and to Know that they matter to someone and won’t get left behind. because tommy never had a family, and even though eryn did, they died and neither of them really know who had it better or worse. and eryn left first but surely they must’ve kept in contact somehow because eryn knew that tommy found a family (without him) and at the very least learned the names of them before they dropped contact with each other. and they found each other again, and they’re still kids, but eryn’s seen the destruction of his home and has killed and yes, he’s half demon, fighting is in his blood, but at the end of the day he’s still just a kid and he’s grown up too fast because he can feel death and hears the voices of the past and the voices that crave violence and he’s numb to it all and he shouldn’t be. and he goes from ripping someone’s heart out straight to wandering into dsmp for the first time and he finds tommy again, and he’s excited and they joke around like they’re kids again and despite everything tommy becomes less and less like the kid eryn knew as his best friend the more he remembers. because tommy’s a good fighter now, and eryn’s still better but tommy’s Leagues better than when they were kids and he’s got scars all over him like he’s lost battles and triple checks his door locks and completely freezes up when some topics are brought up and starts hyperventilating if he sees tnt and almost never talks about the family eryn Knows he loved but mentions exile, and the only thing he says is that he misses it and misses dream because he was Good at being exiled, and eryn doesn’t know what to do with this new, broken tommy so he tries to help and it ends up being the absolute worst way he could’ve done it. and nobody trusts him now despite how he was just trying to help with what little information he was given and the only person who doesn’t seem to actively distrust him is coincidentally the only other demon there and eryn latches on and somehow he’s become competitive with tommy about this new family he’s forced his way into with bad without really knowing Why, but maybe it’ll get tommy to open up about his family with sbi so he doesn’t ever really put a stop to it. and everyone keeps telling him conflicting things about whether or not something is good or bad without ever explaining to him why, because he doesn’t Know, he wasn’t there and nobody’s ever told him, so he goes to eret who has a museum so clearly he must know things and eret talks of a revolution and lmanberg and a disc war and tommy’s family either going insane or killing each other and it becomes more and more clear that eret himself barely knows even the surface of what happened for most events but eryn listens anyway because eret’s the only person who’s willing to explain. and by the end of it eryn’s found out that tommy nearly offed himself in exile and that nearly every other piece of evidence that proves it happened has been exploded and he’s left with more questions than he has answers, but nobody trusts him enough to tell him anything and strangely, he feels as if tommy feels the same. all they’ve ever wanted is a home and a family and to matter to someone but they’ve both grown up too fast and now everythings fucked up, in some stupid curse of the universe

c!wilbur and c!tommy had recently met, and one night while fighting zombies c!wilbur comments on how c!tommy seems to never miss a shot.

c!tommy looks at his bow with a sad smile, and his chest fills with pride as he says "i had a good teacher"

years later, he takes the deciding shot at c!dream and misses. c!dream's arrow lands directly on his heart and as c!tommy falls he wonders if c!eryn would feel the same pride. he dies knowing he probably wouldn't.
