Cool fucking detail I noticed that shows that the OFMD crew absolutely know exactly what they're doing:

I didn't know what this thing is so I looked it up and apparently it's a sailmaker's palm, which is sort of a thimble for your palm. Sailors use them to stitch sails. Despite Pete's bitching about sewing, patching holes in sails is a major part of a sailor's job.

So not only is this just some excellent costuming, it also shows that yes, actually, Frenchie does do quite a bit of sewing.

It’s weird to grow up in a family where you know you’re loved but you don’t feel loved. And then later in adulthood you understand how almost impossible it seems to cross that distance and let yourself experience closeness, how otherworldly love feels now and how love feels unbearable at times. You flinch when someone tries to wholeheartedly love you. And over and over you see so clearly how you cannot be loved unless it's from afar and love is mixed with that familiar sensation of distance and coldness.

Thinking about Ed's self-awareness. like, he's very in tune with his emotions and what he wants and arguably who he is

He's bored as shit because there's no challenge or enrichment to life anymore. So he has Izzy track the weirdo who seems to be doing pirating differently. He keeps Izzy and everyone in suspense about escaping the Spanish in order to build up tension for his big save--the drama!

He's keenly aware of where his preoccupation with/baggage around fancy shit comes from and there's no real hesitation when he admits to Stede that he fancies a fine fabric. He makes no effort to keep the boyish awe in check during Stede's tour. He pretends he's not interested in the fancy party to save some face but recognizes how much he wants to go and *goes* for it.

I've seen a few things refer to him as angry and he's really not. The times he lashes out are pretty healthy aside from how his normal is abusive pirate culture so his way of handling it is through violence. Which doesn't exactly help him heal, but it's normal and expected in his usual social setting.

He's able to genuinely turn on a dime when Lucius reprimands him about how he's treating Stede's adventure attempt--that's immense emotional flexibility and resilience. And he even draws a boundary with Lucius about it.

He knows who he is, he's just exhausted and bored with how monotonous the Blackbeard piece of it all is and wants to branch out and let other aspects of him breathe. He knows what he wants, but the trauma from his mom's teachings and feeling that he's fundamentally a bad person for having killed his dad make it hard for him to stand up for it.

I've said before that part of why he gives up so easily may be in part due to an unstable sense of self but I don't think that anymore. I think if anything he's good at compartmentalizing and codeswitching, and that, in addition to being a brilliant sailor, is how he's lived longer than most pirates he's known. And when he feels threatened --not just sad or momentarily angry-- he compartmentalizes and codeswitchs to survive.

IDK this is still a new thought for me, still feeling it out, feedback welcome lol

ok so @the-moon-loves-the-sea has a wonderful thread about The Chain in the context of Ed and Izzy's relationship and it got me thinking...

one of the things ofmd does phenomenally is stand up to multiple lenses at once. i want to zoom out to the macro scale.

because The Chain is literally thee epic scene this season. that post about knowing exactly who's got the gay pirate brain rot when the song started playing? there's a reason for that. the kiss is understated-emotional. this is epic.

it comes on the heels of "fuck you, Jack. He's my friend!"

there's a shot that looks too close to a head-on version of Washington Crossing the Delaware to be pure coincidence. there's bayonets and shoving and a sky-clad Buttons running about the deck. Frenchie's just playing his lute and gets frickin wasted (rip Frenchie's lute).

Badminton comes rolling over the side like a wave and the navy guys shove everyone's faces in the deck to arrest them.

this is it folks! this ship has sailed, if you didn't believe Lucius last episode with the "oh my god this is happening" well they're getting film language married next ep. (bless all you screencappers and artists for filling my dash with it mwah!)

It is about Izzy selling Ed out. and Spanish Jackie helped too. and Badminton directed the charge.

this is 2 different types of social norms policing their own. one just has to use the other in order to do it.

Badminton is here to remind Stede of who he is supposed to be and how his transgressions against acceptable behavior have (lethal) consequences. Izzy is doing the exact same thing to Ed but he has to negotiate with the royal navy in order to do it.

this is about power. who has access to it. how it gets used. and who it marginalizes.

Stede and Ed are not following the rules and the roles that their societies deem appropriate. Stede stepped out of line, left his quiet, predictable, government approved, miserable family life for piracy. Ed stepped out of line, wearing down the spikey Hot Topic edges of piracy for something more human. Ed's society is smaller, doesn't have access to the kind of fire and manpower the crown can command. but Izzy will not let him go, and Badminton won't let Stede get away.

the system self-polices, self-regulates, self-perpetuates. It is a chain of causality and a chain of restrictions.

and if the system doesn't love you now, it never will. it will strangle you into a cog and keep on chugging. and it promises that it will never break.

and we, those unable or unwilling to go along with it, we're running in the shadow.

and Ed is willing to trade one chain for another. to trade a piracy he seems successful in for a life of servitude as long as the chain might keep them together.

correct, excellent take for cool sexy people: Ed kept Frenchie on the ship because he’s a musician and there were no Spotify breakup playlists in 1717. Ed kept Frenchie so he could force him to play Taylor Swift’s entire discography to accompany his nightly lighthouse-painting-staring ritual. they start a 2-man harpsicord/lute band. Jim sings backup and is really into it because they miss Olu. the rest of the crew finds their way back to the Revenge and when they climb on board they find they’re interrupting an absolutely heartwrenching performance of Mr. Brightside.

So I was thinking about how it’s pretty thoroughly established that Frenchie can’t read or write, but then we get to episode 5 and he a) identifies the party invitation and b) writes receipts as part of the pyramid scheme. The first one could be explained by what little we know of his background – he knows what a fancy party invitation looks like – but what about the receipts? I’ll admit, the possibility that Frenchie lied about his literacy level in order to avoid getting stuck with Lucius’ job was very funny to me, but I went back and looked and no:

No, he just drew pictures again. Which, first off, incredible, love that, but it does kind of make me wonder how he got away with it and the only thing I can think of is that he. That he told them the receipts were written in hieroglyphs. 

And presumably a bunch of aristocrats were like “that sounds fake but I definitely don’t know enough about Egypt to dispute it, one half a pyramid please.”
