It was so good to see this Erysimum cheiri (wallflower, bloody warrior, wall gilliflower) showing clearly how it can grow in nothing more than the mortar between bricks. This short-lived, evergreen perennial is normally grown as a biennial. As the wall indicates plants grow in poor to moderately fertile, well-drained, neutral or, ideally, alkaline soil with full sun. The flowers are sweetly-scented.

#3713 - Erysimum × cheiri - Wallflower

A natural hybrid native to Greece, but widespread in cultivation since at least the 13th Century and probably much earlier. It readily colonises cliffs, loose mortar in walls, and rocks whereever it's been introduced to.

The genus is in the cabbage family, and includes at least 150 species including other popular ornamentals. They've been considered a medicinal herb for at least 1500 years, but claims for what it actually treats are widely varied.
