THE LIGHTHOUSE
Originally an ancient Ayleid structure, the Lighthouse was aeons ago adopted by the Psijic Order both as a repository of knowledge and as a means of safeguarding Tamriel’s shores. Tethered to the planar magic of Artaeum itself, the Lighthouse can be directed by its Keeper to travel to any coast where a ship may be in distress, serving as a beacon for foundering vessels and guiding them to shore. Once the ship is safely moored, the Lighthouse vanishes, returning to Artaeum until it is needed again.
A single Psijic, known as the Keeper, holds guardianship of the Lighthouse. The Keeper must attune themself to the Lighthouse’s magic, forming an immutable bond with the structure; the appointment is thus a lifelong role, with the Keeper’s duties only passed on to the next guardian when the current Keeper dies. While the Lighthouse seems to grant unprecedented long life to its Keepers, even by Psijic standards, this bond also means that the Keeper cannot spend long stretches of time away from their charge; similarly, if the Lighthouse itself is attacked or damaged, its Keeper will suffer accordingly, up to and including death.
Currently serving as Keeper is a High Elf Psijic named Tarahen. Tarahen is said to be a calm and amiable personage, lacking many of the high-brow mannerisms usually associated with Altmer. Like many Keepers before him, he is an accomplished scholar, with a particular focus on the history and magic of the Ayleids. Though understandably protective of the knowledge housed within the Lighthouse’s extensive library, he has been known to allow the odd rare tome or artefact to leave its enchanted shelves - should a potential borrower prove themself trustworthy.
