The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete (2013) - dir. George Tillman, Jr.
Like the candy-coated version of a Spike Lee story, George Tillman and screenwriter Michael Starrbury bring us an odd coming-of-age film about two young boys who must fend for themselves once their mothers are taken away by the government. The film is odd because of its tone, which is somewhat light-hearted, but its rating is certainly R leaving the question: who is the audience? Between it's misguided title and odd demeanor, it would be easy to pass off this film as a failed attempt.
But there's something to it. Tillman gets two incredible performances from his young actors, Skylan Brooks as Mister, and Ethan Dizon as Pete. Each actor is framed in such a way that their charisma seems to go beyond the edges of the screen. The colors used in the film are reminiscent of early Spike Lee films, and in an almost cameo performance Anthony Mackie again asserts himself as an underrated chameleon. Jennifer Hudson is brought in to handle the more intense scenes, and Jordin Sparks has excellent chemistry with Brooks and Dizon. Julito McCullum (Namond in the Wire) takes his very flat role and adds some depth. Ultimately the film still suffers from its juvenile comportment, but, it's that same exuberance that makes the film what it is.

Still thinking of the slim possibility that a live action Xiaolin Showdown movie might be a thing. Started looking around for a potential cast. SEND HELP!
Even if I'm wrong and the rumored XS movie isn't live action, this is still a fun thing to do. For example, I think Ethan Dizon would make a really good Omi. Jake T Austin is a solid pick for Raimundo (though I AM rather depressed to admit it, since I mostly remember him as Max from Wizards of Waverly Place and GOD I FEEL SO OLD NOW) For Kimiko, I'm rather attached to Tiffany Espensen (I know she's Chinese, not Japanese, but she's really cute, and her face and body are perfect for Kim. And Texan actor Kenton Duty for Clay. Dunno who I'd like to play Jack yet. Any ideas?

3.5. -- The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete (2013) -- Grade: A
I love this film wholeheartedly. Really grand acting from the whole cast but especially Skylan Brooks and Ethan Dizon. Their respected breakout performances as Mister and Pete are what drives this film as well as the impacted, very real story of youth in low-income families. I recommend it completely; it's not a plot shown often in cinema.
3.8. -- Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011) -- Grade: B
The editing is brilliant. It's because the editing is so seamless why I didn't realize I was watching two stories during different time lines playing out as memories in a mental disabled head. The direction is brilliant as well.

This line resonates with me because...Yes! I do get that feeling...and I can relate to some of the shit happening in Martha's head/memory/mind in this film and I that is what is wonderful about this film. It draws on a realistic thing that audiences can relate to and it's a character-driven based movie, which is rare. I get the film, and I like that.

I don't remember the day exactly but I remember watching this half assed with my sister in late February, but then I watched it again on the 12th.
I like this movie it a lot. I can see myself watching it a lot over the years as I do with the first one. It still isn't as good as the first one but it's still wonderful, and I just love seeing this cast together. They are all so funny and have so much chemistry it just works. I'm comfortable watching them like I'm watching my old friends. I did after all grow up watching The Best Man and watching all of these great black actors throughout the 90's.

New Edition dance.
Shelby and Candice fight.
Lance upset.
Morris Chestnut's presence.
