i’ve been grieving the flop of Beautiful Creatures for 13 years

I love you, Beautiful Creatures, for being a romance novel that doesn't end with marriage or a baby.

I love you, Ethan Wate, basically going "Listen, we are too young to even start thinking about that. Marry me, not marry me, don't worry about that. I always want to be with you."

I love you, Lena Duchannes, accepting your boyfriend's non-proposal, and when presented with a ring that he describes as cheap and probably not even real silver, but belonging to his mom, going "Even better."

They really went "Fuck consumerism and worship of wealth, fuck fairytale stories about rich princes and perfect princesses, fuck pressuring young adults into marrying early, fuck pressuring young adults into having babies."

And I love remembering that the writers definitely based this book off of Twilight, and having the MMC go "Nah, you don't have to marry me" is such a power move, that they probably didn't even have to think about, it just happened naturally.

Beautiful Creatures Movie Review

I watched beautiful creatures, I give it a 7.5/10. I really loved the lore and the romance between Ethan and Lena. It was a really fun movie to watch and it gave me nostalgia for my 13 year old self who was obsessed with urban fantasy. I know whe's bad but I love Ridley, wished we would have seen more of her.

Beautiful Creatures in real time review:

I'm so used to fantasy meadia having a female main character that's it's taking me a while to conect with this dude Ethan.

I don't like how Ethan treats Emily, like if you don't like the girl just reject her. Even though Emily's character is pretty anoying.

Okay Ethan is lowkey funny. I love that he saw Lena reading a book and went home to read that book too.

In 6th grade, I discovered the Beautiful Creatures series and the main protagonist (Ethan Lawson Wate) is like a 6’4 basketball player and for several years I also wanted to be 6’4 so I could tower over my classmates and my enemies. The white boy who died twice because of his witch girlfriend (who literally, and I mean literally, gives him a fucking heart attack every time they kissed bc he’s just a good ole mortal Southern boy), sassed out the stuck-up girlypops at his school, and babysat a whiny ass Siren was so gender to me.
