jason todd with a gf that clings to him. and not because she needs him or his protection or his money or anything else from him. she’s got it all figured out, has taken care of herself without anyone else’s help for years now. who’s never had a boyfriend because she’s never felt like there’s some void in her life that she needs to fill with romance. who’s completely comfortable with being alone and perfectly capable of advocating for herself.
and then jason comes into the picture. late at night when his patrol gets boring, his mind wanders to pondering what she could need from him. even after a few weeks of dating, he’s constantly asking how can help her, what she needs him to do.
jason, who finds himself surprised when she calls him after work, when dusk is settling in over gotham. and she’s not asking him to walk her home, but just to stay on the phone and tell her about his day to keep her company during her walk. or invites him to sleep over, not so he can jump into action if some criminal happens to break through her window in the middle of the night—but instead because she wants to watch that movie he mentioned was his favorite a few weeks ago.
and for the first time, jason has someone who keeps him around because she wants him there. and not that she wants someone who can do things for her, but because she wants him, and just him.
sometimes he finds his brain in a weird spot where he thinks about how perfect she is. beautiful, smart, independent—how she could have anyone in the world that she wanted. and the thought of him knowing that she could have anyone else doesn’t make him feel scared or insecure or like his place by her side is threatened. instead the idea comforts him, because he knows she could have anyone she wants. but she chose him.
