Play the hero part (Prompt: Everyday Hero)
Ehy, I found the time to try @flashfictionfridayofficial new prompt this time, hope you will like it. It’s a short episode from the life of my half orc oc Keith (Another flashfic with dnd ocs? It’s more likely than you think!)
Sorry for my lame English but it’s not my first language
Heavy and thick snowflakes started falling again from the white-milk sky; usually Keith didn’t mind when it snowed, but since he had just finished sweeping the alley in the back of the inn wasn’t so happy about it. He didn’t want to be grumpy that day though so, after swearing at the first coming flakes, he just sneered by himself and tried to catch the snow with his tongue. He must have looked like a child (a particularly dumb child, he thought), but being a half-orc made him quite unmindful of other people’s judgement. No matter what he did, people would have always looked at him badly.
He laughed and shocked his head for acting silly and was about to go back inside the inn, when he heard screaming from the old shop located in the adjacent street.
«My purse! I’m being robbed! Please, help!»
Keith heard people scuffling and the old woman screaming again; he silently walked to the end of the alley and was about to take a peek, but he had to quickly flatten himself against the wall: two hooded figures were running in his direction, but he saw them sneak in another alley. In the meantime, the woman was outside the shop, with her knees on the floor, still crying for help at the top of her lungs. Keith looked at the woman, then at the alley, then again at the woman. She looked slightly hurt and desperate. He knew that alley took to nowhere, the thieves were probably just patiently waiting for the things to calm down. He clenched his fists.
He was alone at the inn at that time, he could have gone and come back without anyone noticing...
No, no. He couldn't allow himself to be the hero of the day. For who? For a human woman who would have probably slammed the door of her shop in his face in disgust, just seeing him approaching her? It just wasn’t worth it and he couldn’t risk losing his job.
I’ll just let the pigs do their thing, not my business. Nope.
He was about to come back into the inn for good, but he stopped. He knew no guard would have come.
Keith hated himself so much as he dragged himself towards the hole in which those rats holed themselves up.
The old woman managed to get herself on her feet; she sadly realised no one would have helped her and weeping she was checking the bruises on her skinny arms. Suddenly, a familiar purse full of coins landed at her feet. She raised her eyes, now sparkling with joy, and she found in front of herself a green-skinned boy with ginger dreadlocks and freckles. His pierced nose was bleeding and his hands were scratched, but he looked as it didn’t bother him.
«So… yeah, here’s yer bloody money, might want to pay attention to who enters yer fuckin’ shop next time.» She was trying to say something but Keith interrupted her, «Don’t make a big deal about it, I have to go back to work and I had enough pains in the arse for today so yeah… have a good one.»
Keith didn’t want to wait for an answer and finally made his way back to the inn.
Touching his nose while walking, he looked at the snow, falling copiously than before; “I slipped on the bloody snow”, he was pretty sure ‘Boss’ would have fallen for it.
Who the fuck would believe someone like me likes to play the hero part?
