You gasped yourself awake, heart racing, cold sweat, hand clutching at the comforter. You hadn’t meant to fall asleep. Why had you let yourself fall asleep? You knew the nightmares would be back.

“Hey,” Sam was immediately on his feet. The only light in the room was his laptop screen and he left it abandoned immediately when he heard you jump awake. “Hey, hey. It’s okay. It’s alright.” Sam sunk down onto the bed beside you.

You drew your shaky hands over your face. “I shouldn’t have fallen asleep,” you said, knowing your voice sounded desperate and haunted.

“You need it,” Sam said. He could see that you were trembling.

“But when I sleep--”

“I know. Come here,” Sam said. He wrapped an arm around you and you turned into him, pressing into his shoulder, hiding your face against him. He smoothed his hands over your back and gave you a secure squeeze. “You’re okay. It was just a bad dream... just a bad dream.” Sam could now feel how much you were shaking. “I’m right, here. It wasn’t real. You’re safe.”
