Everything wrong with The Boy (2016)
["I'm not a hater, I'm a fan"]
Everything wrong, everything wrong with this film, but don't get me wrong...
The plot of this movie is perfect and beautiful, it allows to create many theories about the reason why these events happened.
And one of the best characters, whom I fell in love at the first second that I saw him: "Brahms Heelshire" Damn! This character is so unique and mysterious, but at the same time, beautiful, a wonderfully sinister character, that would like to know more about his personality, psychological and mental illness. A different character from the others slashers. Also, he looks like a contemporary novel character, just like Erik (Phantom of the Opera)
The problem comes when we talk about the development of the film, that's right, with the production and management team:
Best: I loved the gothic and contemporary aesthetic that the film has. That's perfect, 'cause it seems that Greta is in a totally different time and place. For example: Craigdarroch Castle is perfectly gothic place as the Heelshire Mansion.
WORST
It's so BORING! : The first third part of the film, I feel any emotion. I wish there were scenes where they make you feel suspenseful, scared, or uncomfortable about what's going to happen. But honestly it never happens. The jumpscare scenes are so bad and pointless, it ends up being dumb! I would've loved if the movie had been similar to Within.
SPOILER ALERT!!
Although I obviously prefer the behind story from The Boy, and his character Brahms Heelshire; There are things that I liked more in Within.
For example:
They knew how to work better on supposedly "paranormal events": Like a photo falling on the floor, That personal objects disappear or appear on the other place or Strange sounds coming from the walls or from the attic.
Introduced to the antagonist almost at the beginning of the film. Although I love how they iconically presented the real Brahms coming out of the mirror, also, It would have been interesting to see Brahms move through the walls, watching Greta through them, see how he cut Greta's hair, see him as he watches Greta while she sleeps, see how Greta's doll does. Just like within showed David...
Famous Actors: My big problem with this is that most of the famous actors don't perform well or even if they can, they're not interested cause they know that they're famous... And we can see that William Brent Bell is more interested in the inviting famous actors than actors who does an excellent job. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying their performance is bad, but for me, the best were: Ben Robson (Cole), Diana Hardcastle (Mrs. Heelshire), Jim Norton (Mr. Heelshire) and obviously, James Russell (Brahms Heelshire). James Russell did an excellent job, his acting was amazing and what I loved the most was seeing how he got into the character, and He was able to interpret it in such a realistic way.
Soundtracks: The soundtrack is wonderful but not to create fear in the audience. It looks more like a soundtrack for a gothic drama or dark romance movie than a thriller. The only good moment is when Brahms slowly approaches Greta and the goodnight kiss scene.
