Ex-proshippers, what was the final straw in the community that made you look at it and say, "No, I don't agree with this, I'm going to start psychological treatment to leave the community"? For me, it was when I saw fanart posted on the Instagram stories of an artist from Sebaciel, who drew Vincent sexually abusing Ciel when he was 10 years old while he cried and begged for it to end because it was hurting. I started developing TOC about pedophilia even though I was a teenager at the time (this is when a victim of abuse begins to fear becoming a pedophile in the future), which had serious psychological consequences.

Since I joined Sebaciel communities in my childhood, it was very difficult for me to disassociate, and it wasn't until I was 17-19 that I began to realize I was never really a proshipper. I didn't like lolicon, I didn't like shotacon, and even the Sebaciel I consumed was with the adult Ciel. For me, fiction has always needed limits. All I needed to leave the community was support and a lot of patience, which I fortunately received. I believe there are many new people in the community who are like me or who left for similar reasons.

Friendly reminder that loli/shota manga and anime is considered controversial even in Japan. Not everyone in Japan agrees with the existence of loli/shota hentai. So y’all saying it’s legal over there need to keep this in mind. So to proshippers, stop implying that all Japanese people approve of loli/shota, that’s pretty racist.

Even Hayao Miyazaki had to speak out against lolicons.

has tumblr always been crawling with proshippers and proship views like this? has it decreased recently after the mass exodus? or did it get worse?

Since 2013 before I even saw anyone criticize that shit on a regular basis, hell I think people who criticized ships of that nature (adult/minor, incest, abusive, etc etc) they were called sjws back then. 2014 was when I saw the criticism and got confused because those kind of ships were so normalized to me, and then I saw death threats get sent to proshippers which only pushed me further into that sphere. Took me some years to actually hear out the other side and get out of the proship side of tumblr for good.

As far as whether it got worse or not, I think it's mostly the same as it always was for the most part, but it did get bad on twitter prior to twitter going to shit.

Also still seeing the occasional antishipper wishing death on proshippers which makes me think "Bro... that ain't gonna help, stop that." Like, it's better to educate others about this stuff than to go the aggressive route like that, and sadly a lot of the aggressive threat hurling varieties tend to be quite young.

Also took me until a couple years ago to witness a proshipper sending death threats to an anti, that's when I realized that the aggressive harassing types are on both sides of the whole thing and that basically just prolongs the proship issue and it ruins others' mental health. Like, if you post death wishes towards proshippers, a young or even underage person groomed into the proship sphere is gonna look at that and that'll traumatize them, or worse. It harms more than it helps, same goes with proshippers sending that shit to antishippers, how do y'all think underage antishippers feel about that? That shit's gotta stop on both sides if we want this whole thing to improve.

Hey I know nothing about you I just found you in the results of google for searching up ex proshippers, I just wanted to let you know that I am in the same boat. I was groomed into the proship community when I was 12 and I didn't realize how much it fucked up my life until I was around 20 years old. I wish there was more posts about ex-proshippers like, it would be nice to know that I am not alone. Anyway hope your doing well, much love to you.

Thankfully, people have been supportive. I'm sorry you were dragged into the proship crowd that young. I barely talked to people online but that sure as hell didn't stop the internet from influencing me, like when the Kodomo no Jikan ED credits became a meme in the late 2000s when I was in high school, and some shit I found on deviantart over the years.

It took everything in me to say this, but I used to be a proshipper. I’m not anymore and I feel awful that I used to believe them and I look back in some proship blogs I followed back in like 2016 and I’m horrified by what I witnessed.

One blog had a fucking m/a/p as a mod, one has a dreamwidth where they support m/a/ps and nsfw rpf involving underage celebrities. It wasn’t until I took a step back from them that I realized just how messed up it all is. Hell, there are even proship selfshippers!! >_<

Sad thing is, I look up ex-proshippers anywhere and I don’t see ANYONE else who’s had the same experience as me, but I see plenty of “ex-antis”. Is there anyone out there who went through the same thing I did?

Have you ever dealt with call out posts as a ex-proshipper? Do you have any advice to people who are dealing with alot of hate for having been a proshipper in the past?

Thank god I didn't. But I always got anxiety whenever I witnessed someone else getting called out because I was afraid I'd be next. But that never happened.

Glad to find another ex-proshipper. I found a lot of proshippers were ableist too and when I tried to call out their ableist bs, they couldn’t handle it. They seem to be very bigoted in general. I also hate how they’re like “you’re a proshipper if you don’t harass people” like no?? I can hate things and think certain content shouldnt exist and is bad without harassing people! Not everyone is an anti that doxxes people like they think lol

That's a lesson that took me WAY too long to learn, it was the harassing and death threats that pushed me to the proshipper side after all. It wasn't until more recently when I learned that they definitely aren't always like that and that proshippers can be just as guilty of harassing and all that as well.

For a while, the harassment and cross tagging was the only thing I saw. Now, not so much, but I do see a lot of proshippers crosstagging and antagonizing people as well, even back then and I never realized it until now.

Looking at what I'm uncomfortable with and against and comparing against both groups, I can see that the so called antis had a point all along, at least in the way I see it.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one here. And no, it's not due to sexual shame like some proshippers are willing to claim. Hell, stuff like noncon and dubcon trigger me big time these days after my own childhood traumatic experience basically came back in full force to haunt me. I never reacted badly to it before then, except for one fnaf fanfic I came across years ago.

Also, I feel like the “artistic freedom” mindset I took back then was a leftover from my conservative-ish Christian school days. It basically forgone morals in favor of aiming for a free-for-all that can be dangerous for others. Only thing I agreed on back then was that disturbing content needed a trigger warning, so if people are gonna be making a noncon or dubcon rule 34 pic, they BETTER put a trigger warning on that so I can avoid it like the plague.
