Ohmygodohmygodohmygod I just had a moment. You know how the gif set of Allison dying in Scotts arms and the parallel with Liam and Hayden is floating around? Apply it to sterek and angst with happier ending
You know what’s even worse than those gifsets? The ones of Allison in Scott’s arms, Hayden in Liam’s, and Paige in Derek’s.
Because when it happens again with Stiles? Derek literally can’t believe it. How can the universe possibly hate him so much that his first girlfriend dies in his arms, the next two are mass murderers, and his last boyfriend also dies in his arms. His last, because he knows even now that there’ll never be anyone else. Stiles was it for him. And now he’s going to be gone.
Hunters had kidnapped him a day ago–of course, because when aren’t hunters trying to ruin their lives?–and held him, and the pack’s been looking nonstop. Scott’s on the other side of town with Liam, and Malia, Kira, and Lydia are somewhere in between, while Derek’s headed to the warehouse district. The second he reaches it, he picks up Stiles’ scent. He doesn’t howl for Scott quite yet, because just because he was here, doesn’t mean he is. But when he steps into the fourth warehouse, all hell breaks loose. Stiles is against the back wall, held at gunpoint, and as soon as Derek creeps inside, his eyes widen in fear. That’s enough to alert the guy watching him, and suddenly there are guns trained on Derek, too, and they have no qualms about shooting.
Unfortunately for them, they’re either terribly inexperienced, or they deeply underestimated Derek’s care for his mate, because he’s fought and killed all of them within two minutes–which maybe, maybe he would feel bad about, if one of them hadn’t shot Stiles in the fray.
Stiles, who’s clutching his chest as he sinks to the ground, already coughing up blood. Stiles, who’s the first guy Derek ever loved. Stiles, who’s the second person to really love Derek back. Stiles, who Derek knows he can’t live without.
By the time he hits the ground, Derek is there, pulling him into his lap. He grapples at Stiles’ hand with both his shaking ones, holding tightly and pulling pain. That’s a good sign, right? That he can take his pain? Unless- unless it’s just going to hurt till he dies. Unless-
“Hey, Der, it’s okay,” Stiles says, trying to smile as he looks up at him.
But it’s not. It’s not okay, because there’s blood flowing from his chest, all over their locked hands, and dribbling down Stiles’ chin even as he smiles.
“I’m- ‘m’gonna be fine,” he assures, and it hurts to hear his heartbeat skip on what he knows is a lie. “Just- uh, just call someone- just-”
And then he coughs again, spewing blood, and Derek can’t find it in himself to tell him that he doesn’t have his phone, and that an ambulance wouldn’t make it in time, anyway. Derek was just supposed to howl if he found him, not-
Stiles coughs again, his whole body shuddering with the effort, and Derek does it. He howls.
It sounds mournful, even to him, and Scott’s answering howl is so, so far away.
“I love you,” Stiles says, and it sounds too much like goodbye. “And, and Scott, and Dad, um-” tears start to run down his cheeks, making tracks in the blood splattered there, “-tell them I love them, and- and I’m sorry for-”
“Hey,” Derek interrupts, finally finding his voice. “Don’t say that. Scott’s going to be here soon. You’re going to be fine.”
“Yeah,” Stiles agrees, his damn heart skipping again. “Yeah, I- I know, but just in case. And I love you, Derek.” His voice sounds so much quieter, his heartbeat is so much weaker. “I love you, and- I don’t want you to- to feel guilty, or-”
How could he not? If only they had found him sooner, if only Derek were still an alpha, if only-
Stiles chokes, clutching his other hand over where his and Derek’s are pressing into the wound.
His heart is still beating, painfully slow, but it seems he’s unconscious.
“Stiles?” Derek insists, shaking his hand. “Stiles, c’mon. Stiles, you can’t-”
He throws his head back and howls again; not for Scott, just in desperation. Stiles isn’t gone yet, but soon, so soon.
It’s another few minutes before Scott barrels in through the door, not even stopping to check for hunters, just running over to where Stiles’ limp body is cradled in Derek’s arms, heartbeat so, so slow.
He grabs Stiles’ wrist and bites down before Derek even gets a chance to say anything.
To say that he’s too weak for it to take, that it’s been too long, that there’s no way to save him. He wouldn’t be able to bring himself to say those things, anyway.
Stiles’ heartbeat gets slower, and slower, and slower, till it finally stops.
Scott hears it the exact second Derek does, looking up at him, eyes wide and horrified. There are tears streaming down Scott’s face, and Derek’s sure he’s crying too. It’s hard to tell. All he feels is numbness.
They sit there for five minutes, ten, just holding Stiles’ hands and crying, Derek silently and Scott loud and hitching, each of them occasionally letting out a baleful howl.
After what feels likes an eternity, Derek hears it. The softest noise. His eyes snap to Scott’s, desperate for confirmation that his mind isn’t playing tricks on him. Scott’s looking back at him, just as tentatively hopeful.
There, just the faintest sound, is a heartbeat. Getting louder, and louder, and louder.
When Stiles opens his eyes, looking up at them, he smiles weakly again, and regardless of his bloodstained teeth and pale lips, it’s the most beautiful smile Derek has ever seen.
